please help, need advice for a good sprinkler

I am wanting to make watering my lawn easier, and want to know the best type of sprinklers for my yard. I bought a rotary sprinkler and also just bought a timer, I have thought about buying the quick-snap where you bury the sprinkler in your yard because it had good reviews on amazon. I have also thought about perhaps getting an impulse sprinkler and using both the impulse and rotary. I cant afford an underground system, and just wondering what other people have. thanks

Are you handy? If so you can do a decent inground system fairly cheap. First off what size is your lawn? That can help with this question

I've got an inground irrigation system and it originally had impact sprinklers in some areas and popups in others. When a sprinkler head went bad, I would replace it with the same kind. Last year or the year before, I replaced one of the impact sprinklers with a gear driven sprinkler. After seeing how much better that worked, whenever an impact sprinkler went out, I replaced it with a gear driven head. Actually, I replaced a couple that didn't even need it because the gear driven sprinklers were so much better. The distribute the water more evenly, they're less prone to failure and they're very quiet.

rbig, For 2 years now I have orded over $1500 in parts from Sprinkler Warehouse. As a matter of fact I just ordered 3 more heads and 12" flex pipes today. They have always been quick with shipping and I have never had a bad part sold to me. I have 40 IP-20 adjustable aec heads, this will be the third season, no dirt issues at all. Great heads. Today I needed 3 more heads, so I orderd the IP-20 stainless steel heads, we'll see how they work. The time-honored way of installing these was to dig an over-sized hole, install the sprinkler and fill the space with gravel. This facilitates drainage and prevents soil from getting into the case.

Hi Lawn, In my opinion, oh by the way you have done a great job with providing enough information, thanks, you have one thing to check and two options. Others may have a different opinion or actually better advice. First make sure you are getting your 4 gpm by capping off 2 of the sprinklers and connecting a threaded nipple to the third with a 90 degrees bend set up. Measure the flow from that outlet set up and see if you are receiving what you think you should be getting. If you aren't your valve may not be opening all the way. If you are then replace your nozzles with lower flow ones say .75 gpm. A smaller orifice with throw water farther and you only need to water longer to get your needed water. Option two which is where money and effort come to play is to increase the number of zone to 4 and decrease the head flow slightly to 1.5 gpm/head. With the pressure you have you might try rotory heads which have more flexibility in nozzle size and throw. Any way you understand the trade offs now. Is there any way to increase your flow with another tied in source? Good luck and aloha.

I did find out that after a few waterings the balls didn't seem to be as floatacious as they had been - quite a relief. I think they just float a lot when they are brand new / very dry. Here is what I have now: - 5 gallon bucket as the res. - I find it takes only 2 gallons to completely flood to the overflow level, and as was said, I am only flooding to about half of that height b/c the rest will wick and stay moist. So it's probably only about 1 gallon to flood the tray. This is great! Saving $$$ on nutes in my small system with an efficient reservoir and flood tray. - I put the air stone back in the res. after charlie little's comment. I was afraid to because I don't have a lid for the bucket (yet!) and a little bit of water drops tend to jump out of the bucket. I put some black/white poly on top of the bucket as a temporary lid and it's working fine to keep the water droplets inside. - I am considering drilling a hole very near the top of the bucket and attaching a fitting so that I can easily make a light-tight reservoir by routing the hoses through there. The power cord for the pump would be a challenge though, unless I can get an air lift to work, then there would be no bulky end to a power cord so it would be easy to set up. - I put black/white poly in between the plants so that you can't even see any of the clay balls. I think I need to set the timer down to maybe every five hours instead of 3 as I think there will be ample moisture in there. - Tomato seedling leaves are curling really bad and I think it may be because they are too wet so I didn't irrigate at all today and will cut the timer back more for tomorrow when I go into the office. - Once the seedlings take off a little more I will try to post some pics. - I am not using organics yet but want to try at some point in the future.

Steve-I'm interested in knowing more. I have roughly 3K in the front and 10K in the back. From front to back the elevation drops at about 50 degrees. No turf on the steep slopes.

I thought a rotary was an impact sprinkler??? I don't like them unless I have a perfectly round area to water...and then I don't like them for that.

I have finally come back to oscillating sprinklers.

These provide much more even coverage over a rectangular shape than any other kind of sprinkler. I've been trying new ones this year. The 'turbine' powered ones seem to work better than the old worm-drive type. I had bad luck with a Gilmour turbine, though. It doesn't know when to stop oscillating and ran in complete circles (under the sprinkler). Never did figure out how it was supposed to work.

I have two oscillators running off of one Vigoro (Home Depot only) timer. That works okay.

If you want to try a gear driven sprinkler, you can make a homemade version using a Toro or whatever gear manufacturer you like mounted on the frame for a portable impulse type sprinkler.

On the subject of sprinklers, the better Craftsman brand hoses are guaranteed for life. No matter what happens to it you can exchange it for a new one without a receipt and no questions asked.
