Just wanted to share the xmas tree I made for my neices first home. Just finished this morning. That was cutting it close!

I grow several examples of a close relative of your plant in containers (Cupressus pygmaea - dwarf Mendocino cypress) and I really like them. I'm sorry to say that I don't think you'll have much luck treating them as a houseplant. The three main reasons are, they like a cold winter's rest; they need full sun, and indoor light is probably not going to satisfy them; and they need air movement to help keep them pest free. I would look at air conditioning and central heating as a disadvantage as well - if those considerations are in play. Your zone is ideal for growing them outdoors, but I'd give them some protection in winter if the temperature is expected to drop below 25-28*. The plant can be kept VERY small with regular attention to grooming, and if you learn how to prune the roots when you repot (as opposed to potting up) you can keep them in very small containers for a very long while. A similar looking plant would be rosemary. You could also try a Shimpaku juniper (Juniperus chinensis/sargentii 'Shimpaku'), which would need no winter protection. Linda, I'll have to check that out.. Kylie, I hardly ever find good construction stuff..hubby brings home nice wood n stuff..he never lets me have any..greedy, lol. I made out like bandit about 2 months ago, I found a mother load of PVC..you can bet your butt, I took it all, lol. In the middle of making a cold-frame with some, and I wanna use some more of it to make shelving for plants on my back porch. F4F, wow you musta got alotta stuff there! Wish I had a place like that around here. Today was pick-up day in my town, was cruisin after dropping the kids at school, but noone has anything out except xmas trees. I took advantage of this amazingly warm weather we are having and painted the candy cane arch today..not so bad lookin I guess, lol. It will be SO much better when there's beautiful plants growing up it. This weather is SUCH a tease!! Gonna be about 70 here today..was 68 yesterday. Just insane. Anywho..I'm gonna plug it in 2nite and see if the lights shine thru good enough with 2 coats of paint. Also be interesting to see what color it lights up as with green paint. If it doesnt look good, I'll just pull the lights out.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to find one growing wild and dig it up. However, I would not recommend putting it in her room. Mountain Ash trees (I am referring to Sorbus americana) are outdoor plants, and, if they are like most other temperate plants, they will die if they are put indoors. Jaybird, you're as bad as me. That kind of yard stuff is called "wildings" I just found out. Nuts, berries, seedpods, etc. Guess that sounds better than Garden Junk. LOL. Everytime I spy something off a tree or bush I think before tossing it of what I could do with it. LOL. Whatever kind of trees are in my front yard, they have huge brown seed pods that generally fall off in groupings. I love them. Last year painted some gold and some silver for Xmas use around the house. hugs, Karen

Ooooooooooo, another creative way to use Christmas ornaments. How beautiful. Oh, am I getting ideas for my spring patio this morning!!!!! What is that glass stack to the right of the topiary?

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. Anyone have a better idea to use instead of the moss to hide the form in the pot? Unfortunately my neice didnt get in the house for this xmas, closing was delayed. But she'll have it for next year!!

Slowmedown, that is a trio of long stem goblets in varing lengths that I picked up at bb&beyond this season. $20 for al three. I figure I can vary what I put in the cups for whatever season is upon us. Great centerpeices.

Seafire: Must have missed reading this thread. SO, HOW DID YOU MAKE IT? Styrofoam ball and glue gun? What a nice auntie you are!

Yes, styrofoam tree shaped topiaryand spraypainted it gold. I bought a few when Frank's garden shoppes went out of business in NJ. I used glass balls (that had wires attached which I detatched) and hot glued them on. I also used some plastic garland to break up the balls. I put the garland on first, but I would suggest putting the garland on as you need it, this way you can adjust for the width of the rows of balls. Keep the balls tight together to avoid empty spaces. I spray painted a terra cotta planter and I made the wire bow myself. The whole thing probably took about 8 hours. Easy but time consuming due to each ball having to dry before you could continue. And the tree was constantly on its side in my hand. I would suggest plastic or unbreakable balls if you can find small ones for obvious reasons. (I have extras that I'll include in the gift)

I really like your topiary & think the moss is perfect. I woundn't change a thing. It looks fairly large, what size is it & the cone you started with?
