How do you make a lawn Xmas tree shape with lights?

How would you make a christmas tree for the yard with lights? I see them in some lawns of homes when I drive by. It looks like the tree is made of wires and in the shape of an Xmas tree then lights around them and a star on top? I tend to favor the traditional lights vs. the flashing blinking

busy looking ones. I want to make one for my yard, but want it to be safe so I don't have a fire or anything. Anyone know how to do it?

I've seen tomato cages used as the wire framming. I've even seen several wired together to make the tree tall. Also you will need to anchor the wire frame to the ground. If the ground is not frozen where you are you can take wire cutters and cut up clothes hangers to make u-shaped stablizers. (Like the ones that you buy to lay weed cloth.) Hammer these into the ground to hold the wire frame tight to the ground.

Fire hazzards would be caused by using old frayed light strings or extention cords designed for interior use only.

Lights strings and extention cords should be approved for "exterior use". I also like to wrap where the light string plugs into the extention cord with a plastic bag and black electrical tape.

I realized that you may be discribing the kind of tree shaped lights laying on the ground??????? They make plastic stakes for that. The green stakes are pounded in the ground and the string lights are looped around them to become whatever design shape you want.

Can you post a couple pictures? The best time to photograph a lawn is when a cloud goes overhead. It would be good to see from far enough away to see the trees and then a close up of the dry spot in the middle. Did you have Marathon in Calabasas before? If not where? And what was your watering regimen (how often and for how long)? Can we assume you are watering this lawn the same way? When were the last two times you fertilized, or have you fertilized yet? Hopefully your close up picture will help someone here to identify your current grass type. Different grasses can be eradicated by different means. Sometimes it's as simple as stopping watering. I'm not sure you will ever be able to apply enough water for those trees. That is a lot of timber to keep moist. The tool which professional landscapers use to prep a garden is a box blade pulled behind a tractor. This is what it looks like in action. The ripper bars you see on the box blade (like a rake sitting above the soil in the blade) can be used to remove most small roots, but there is a limit. When you get ready to get rid of the trees, you might want to consider major stump removal, not grinding, and root removal throughout the rest of the yard. For those two jobs they might bring in a small bulldozer or other heavy equipment.

I'm one who found the trench edge too much maintenance. To keep it looking nice and crisp, it needed work three times each season or soil washing down from the beds started to fill the trench and blur the edges. My case is a bit unusual since I'm disabled and use a walker for mobility. The trench was also becoming a hazard - if I walked too close to the edge and any of the the walker wheels dropped into the trench, I was apt to fall. The brick edging was a great relief for both maintenace and safety. We waited until we thought the beds were likely to stay pretty much stable in size and shape before we did the brick edge. We changed one the next year, which was a bit of a pain. The other thing I do - mainly in the backyard - is put a mulch path between the bed and the lawn so the grass is nowhere near the bed. The grass seems less inclined to invade the path and easier to remove - or mulch over - if it does.

My biggest disaster was my tree. Instead of my fake pre-lit one,DH insisted he wanted a real tree this year. The Saturday before Christmas,ge was nowhere to be found so I went to the lot alone. Found a bushy round balsam pine for $40 and lugged it home but we couldn't get it to stand up. The tree stand we own just wouldn't work,it kept tipping over. So we dragged it out to the curb, and i went back and got a table top tree for $9. It looks very cute, I was able to put our electric star and two strands of light on it and about two dozen smallish ornaments. Can't post a digital photo, but it was okay. I'm tired of looking at it, I hope to get it down sometime this week. Other than that, Christmas was good, food good, ate a lot, everyone enjoyed their gifts. And Happy New Year. I have my champagne and roast beef ready for tonight. And Eggs Benedict for brunch Jan 1.

If I am remembering correctly a cut/trim crew needs to be charging about $2 per MINUTE they are on the property working to stay in business, that number may be regional, but it is a way to evaluate prices. We are paying $175/month annual to cut, trim, blow 1 acre and maintain 6 planting beds. The beds get roundup as needed and the hedge lines are kept shaped. This was bid as $150 for the cut/trim/blow and $25 for the beds. The crew is on site ~20 minutes with two mowers running. In the summer they need to double cut if there is rain, winter they cut bi-weekly or less. For the combo service including application of chemicals you will get a cheaper rate because the crew can apply during a trip to cut. There is also the possible benefit that the cutting crew MIGHT see issues before a scheduled application - but don't count on it. The cutters who apply chemicals are often just trying to make a buck by marking up the materials a little while undercutting the competition. They may have no clue what they are applying... so do consider the cost of losing the lawn to pest or disease. We pay $60/month annual contract for a minimum of 6 applications and whatever else is needed to maintain healthy grass.

Some people around here use ladders -- and from a distance with the lights wrapped around it, it looks like a tree.

Mango here is a pic oc mine made with tomato cage. Pix were hard to capture how pretty it really is. I have mine weighted with stones on the bottom sides.
