Lawn-Boy 7263 removing muffler plate

I'm trying to remove the muffler cover on my Lawn Boy 7263 so I can clean out the exhaust ports, but can't remove the last item before the cover - according to the parts list this is known as the "collar and plate assembly." I've tried tapping on one side with a hammer to release the taper and have even tried a gear puller to no avail. Has anybody else experienced this problem before and have a solution? What am I doing wrong or need to do to get this thing off?? Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Oh yah, this is an indication of over tightening the blade nut or just plain old corrosion holding it.

These plates are fairly cheap if you ruin it. I am surprised that you haven't ruined it using a gear puller on it.

I use an air chisel with a blunt bit in it to go in behind the plate on the collar and it usually pops them right off.

The approved way is to tap on the end of the plate forward or backwards to the direction of rotation. Some people hold a hammer on the end of the plate then hit that with another hammer.(eye protection) Never worked for me.

Heat on the plate/collar generally helps.

Thanks Walt for your reply. You're absolutely correct regarding the gear puller...I stopped using it when I observed the plate starting to bend. I'll replace the plate when/if I ever get the darn thing off. I do have an air chisel and will give that a try. Thanks again for the info.

Congratulations on your newly aquired Lawn-Boy! Im glad to see someone who appreciates a fine machine. About 24 years ago I aquired my first Lawn-Boy, a brand new F series with aluminum deck. Man I treasured that mower, cleaning it like brand new every mowing and it treated me with one of the best looking lawns in the neighborhood for several years. I suddenly had to change jobs and move out of country for a couple years and ended up giving the mower to a young brother in law. I really hated to see it go but you have to do what you have to do for the familys future. I returned to visit family about 5 months later and when I asked brother in law how he liked the mower, well he kind of gave a dirty look and shook his head and proceeded to tell me how much of a POS that mower was and how the engine was locked up and he just threw it away! The ninny forgot to mix fuel with oil and destroyed it, only to blame the mower! Im very glad to see a mature person take posession of your mower and hope you have a lot of fun with it!

If you getting droplets of oil on the TOP side of the deck that are clear to medium brown, then it might be coming from the crankcase due to not enough sealant used from the factory. I have this problem on one of my F-series engines. It starts and runs well, but drips and sometimes spits a few bubbles of oil around 1 of the case bolts when running. Isn't harming anything other than making the deck kind of messy. With the engine running and someone behind the handle, carefully check the engine around the carb for this condition. If you find it, you'll need to split the case and clean the halves, and reseal it with a small bead of anerobic gasket maker available at most auto parts stores.

Hi Andrew, any luck getting this collar plate off?? I'm having the same problem on my LB 7263 and have tried everything including using an air chisel on the collar (had one gentleman tell me it worked for him) but no luck. I just gave the hammer technique a try - also to no avail. Guess I'm gonna try cutting the plate off and using a gear puller to (hopefully) remove the collar, as one of your responders suggested.
