Snapper 28' Rider Transmission

My rear engine Snapper rider slips badly in 1st gear, will barely move at all in 2nd gear, but mows very well in 3rd gear. The mower is old, the bearing on the left rear wheel I believe is very worn even though it has been kept lubricated, and I suspect the entire drive train needs to be cleaned and inspected.... The mower was repowered with a 12hp B&S (original was 8hp) about 5 years ago and the engine is in good condition... Any recommendations as to what is causing the first two gears to slip, and what experience has anyone had in repairing the remainder of the drive train? ... I intend to do the work this fall if I can nurse the mower through the remainder of the mowing season..... thanks in advance for any advice and technical information .....
