What is a good fast growing grass seed?

I recently did some construction work which required me to replace about 4000 sq ft of my neighbors lawn. I had a landscaper power rake it and hydroseed it. Most of the grass has come up, but there are a few bare spots now. Is there a fast growing seed that I can use to fill in the bare spots? I recently bought a 5 lb bag of "Landscaper mix" from TSC, and it's basically a rye grass mix. I used it on my own lawn and it is growing painfully slow, even with daily watering. Thanks.

Perennial rye is the fastest to germinate and grow, but in July those growth rates will be much reduced. Root growth is minimal in soil temps above 70 degrees, and stops around 77. Topgrowth also slows in summer, so growth rates won't be very fast regardless of the grass you plant.

As stated perennial rye grass is the champion of fast germination and growth rate, but to be honest any cool season grass in the hot weather is going to struggle germinating and growing. What does germinate will likely burn up in the heat.

I couldn't tell you about that seed in particular but I've come across a number of plants on the DG description that say they don't produce seed or it's sterile and have found that to be false.Some might not produce plants the same as the parent but I've found a number of supposedly sterile plants that have produced viable seed. I'd say just give it a try. The worst that will happen is it won't grow.

If the yard is not St Aug. then more than likely it is large leaf crab grass. Above is the best you can do and I will add to hope the new sod doesn't yellow from transplant shock which would make it stand out even more. If your friends/guests are going to be raising an eyebrow about that ugly little spot of grass in your backyard, I suggest you find new friends.

That grass mix you got should be fine! Rye is known to grow fast. It could be soil or lack of water causing the problem.
