Looks like, in it's past life, it attached to the wall or something solid and something was wound on it.

So, what do you have in mind for this treasure?

Very cool. and the pumpkins are fantastic.

I thought hose reel too and then the more I looked at it, it seemed like the reel was too big, not enough room for the hose. And the crank doesn't look strong enough for a hose, but it's hard to tell without seeing it for real.

It's a reel for something anyway- which brings me to my second idea-I just thought of this while writing all those reals and reels, lol, Kind of looks like a giant fishing reel!

OR my first idea was (when you said you would have to store it for 6 months) if you hung it in a vertical position (with the crank on top) maybe paint it white (or whatever theme you like) and string it with mini lights, it could be done up like a little carosel with glittery horses (or reindeer!) attached to the bars and red and white ribbons or candy canes or green garlands hanging in it.

OR also hanging vertical, leave it black, it could be made like a lantern-wrap it with celophane and put a light inside it and some greens and pine cones around it for Christmas.

About nailing it to a tree, I don't know. I always hesitate to, too, but then I have seen things that were nailed to trees a long time ago that turned out ok. I guess a lot would depend on how heavy it is, how big a nail you'd have to use, how big the tree is.

Oh what great ideas! It's actually a green, so the Christmas theme would work!

I haven't packed it away yet, so I'll have to take another look at it-

Mjowest, do you sell gourds and such at the end of your driveway? The background of your picture looks like the place I purchased 2 apple gourds and a snake gourd. The drive way was lined with pumpkins like yours is.

I think its a paper roller, they wound newspaper tight and used as firestarters
