Bobcat ZT Mower Electrical Problems

After mowing for a good hour the mower will shut off. When I try to start it back nothing happens or it just clicks. But you can jump it off. After I put the battery on charge it's fine but only lasts for a another hour or so. It is a brand new battery also. Please Help.

Sounds like you charging system isn't working. Put a volt meter on the battery with the engine running. If you aren't getting at least 13 volts, you're not charging the battery.

446877-0121e1 is the only engine model that seems to match the #s you have. Here are the facts using my #.(Your # is incomplete) The current Briggs specified replacement engine is a 44Q777 3136 and uses 790132 or 796256 crankshaft. There are 5 service notes on transferring parts from the parts from the original 44 to this engine. Transfer the governor spring, throttle control, muffler from the old engine (or buy new) , remove part # 791412 and add part # 691121. You should also be able to make that engine from a 44P777 0026. that comes w/ 3 service notes. Transfer muffler, oil sensor and governor spring. There are several different cranks for the 44" build. If you find a buy, look up the crank and see if it matches the above crank #s. Obviously, there will be a bit more to this and you want to verify the model #.

I bought a 2006 Exmark Lazer Z 52" Zero Turn in 2009 from a commercial landscaper/mower with a 23 HP Kawasawki engine.. The first thing I did with it was take it to a dealer who looked it over. He replaced the two spark plugs, the blades and one spindle. I also assumed that he checked out the serial number for me. It's quite common to see these machines come off lease at three years old, but this one had been purchased. I paid $3500 and have been using it ever since to do an acre and a half. i've never had problems with the hydraulic pumps or motors except that if the fluid gets low it gives a growling whining sort of noise when going up a grade so I add a little fluid and I'm good to go. I wore out some mower deck belts till I learned not to use it to plow piles of leaves with the blades spinning. I replaced the hydraulic belt myself two years ago and the automotive type oil filter that filters the hydraulic fluid a few times . It's had a another blade spindle, a starter solenoid 2 years ago and a starter motor last year. Not bad for a 15 year old machine. i can't remember a single problem with broken parts for the frame, the deck etc. I did all the maintenance myself till I got too old to figure out how to get at the starter motor bolts. My only complaint is that I don't think the deck is wide enough because if it were wider it would go around the three foot diameter fencing I have up around new fruit trees to keep the deer off them. They had a 60" deck but it wasn't available with a bagger; as I remember. I know you're going to question buying used but perhaps a used machine like mine is better than those you're criticizing here. I'd suggest if you look at one to look at the broken parts. Things like the wheels on the mower deck, the casters for the front wheels. If they're busted off or bent you get an idea how they respected their machine.

Read and re-read this carefully. It might seem complex to the novice but it is really a straight forward and in depth explanation of what goes on, and what you will be looking at. Remove the spark plug from each cylinder. You will adjust BOTH valves on "the same cylinder", ONLY AFTER THAT CYLINDER has been positioned to the proper point in the 4-stroke cycle. Remove the valve cover from both cylinders. Identify each valve as INTAKE valve or EXHAUST valve by doing a visual reference. The INTAKE valve will be physically closest to where the intak manifold connects to the head and the EXHAUST valve will be nearest to where the exhaust manifold connects to the head. Next you need to determine which direction the engine rotates when running. You can determine this by spinning the engine with the starter while watching the flywheel through the fan shroud. Mark the direction with an arrow (at least on a sketch if not on the engine). Once you have determined the direction of rotation, you can proceed to positioning the engine for valve adjustment. You should trun the engine by hand a few complete revolutions to familiarize yourself with the sequence of valve movements through the entire 4 stroke cycle. It requires two complete revolutions of the crankshaft (720 degrees of crankshaft rotation) to one complete "4 stroke cycle". The 4 strokes of a four cycle engine are (and in this sequence): (1) INTAKE STROKE (2) COMPRESSION STROKE (3) POWER STROKE (4) EXHAUST STROKE. The compression stroke is the stroke where you perform the valve adjustments. Before we try to figure out how to identify the compression stroke for a specific cylinder let's describe the movements of the valves and the terms used: When a pushrod is RISING and lifting a rocker arm, the rocker arm will be pushing a valve DOWN. When a valve is DOWN, it is OPEN. When a valve is UP, it is CLOSED. OK, turn the engine by hand in the correct direction of rotation while watching both valves of the cylinder you are going to adjust the valves on. When you get to a point in the turning where the INTAKE VALVE begins to rise up (closing) and the exhaust valve is already UP (closed), you are in the beginning of the COMPRESSION STROKE. At this time you need to insert a wooden pencil or a wooden dowel rod straight into the spark plug hole until it contacts the piston. Hold the dowel firmly against the piston with one hand and resume turning the engine with the other hand. Observe how the piston pushes the dowel out of the plug hole as the piston moves toward the magical point known as Top Dead Center (TDC). At the point where the dowel movement stops, mark the dowel flush with the edge of the plug hole. Now, measure upward 1/4 inch from that mark and put a second mark. Put the dowel back in the hole, firmly against the piston and slowly resume turning the engine (in the direction of rotatation) and you will see the dowel move into the hole as the piston drops. Continue turning the engine until the second mark on the dowel is flush with the edge of the spark plug hole. This cylinder is now in the correct position for adjusting the valves ON THIS CYLINDER ONLY. After adjusting the valves on this cylinder, you will need to repeat the entire procedure to get the opposite cylinder into position to adjust its valves.

Good luck on getting the pulleys off. Sometimes it helps to heat the pulley hub area with a propane torch after you get a good pull going with the puller in place. Yes, you certainly do need to remove rust and any "burrs" you detect on any portion of the crankshaft the seal will have to travel over as you install the new seal onto the crankshaft. If you are going to remove the sump cover (and replace the sump gasket) there is no need to install the sump cover and then try to drive the seal in place. If the sump cover is off, put the new seal into the cover before you put the cover back on. While it IS NOT necessary to remove the sump cover simply to replace the crankshaft seal, Briggs sump gaskets do eventually fail, and if yours is not already leaking, it is good practice to go ahead and replace the sump cover gasket at this time, considering what a bear it can be to get pulleys off.

My bobcat zero turn is doing the same thing, runs for half hour and stops, battery is dead, what parts do i need to correct this charging problem?

charging problem bobcat zt when blades are engaged volts drop and mower blades stop and sometime entire mower quits any suggestion.When restarted no blades going it will start and run for 1/2 to an hour and then same thing happens. I replaced harness, battery and rectifier but it did not help. all major system reading's ok as spec suggest what should i pull apart next. or should i get the gun out for it or me?

Wow I havent owned a bobcat zt in years. Mine had this same issue turned out to be the voltage regulator. I agree with "orangedotfever" it is a charging system problem probly the same problem I had.

The following usefull link is for a new holland (ford) tractor but it is the same principle.. Hope it helps

Since the charging system is basically part of the ENGINE, knowing WHAT engine was on it would be a big help in troubleshooting.
Brand -Model- Type/spec etc.

Changed out voltage regulator, didn't do a thing,then harness,battery, traced wiring etc not sure whats next to look at. any information would be greatly appreciated.

Stator producing 34 volts ac battery runs at 12.34 at full throttle and 12.19 with pto engaged. regulator has been replaced, new battery, and regulator harness and overall looked at everthing but can't seem to find what's causing my problem.

Stator output is important information!
Now, all we need is someone with KAW experience to let us know if 34VAC is enough.

Apples to Oranges, but for example, some Briggs are spec'd for 28 VAC minimum, while others are a 40 VAC min.

Aye dont look at me I dont know kawi engines only kubota cant help there. It all sounds like a bad ground to me.

Thanks for trying to help me figure this thing out. spent the better part of yesterday tracing wires and retracing my steps can't find anything. My tractor guy is puzzled too. Tells me to keep checking stuff but have not found anything yet. output readings are to spec recomendation until you start the blades. Needs to maintain 13 and it drop to 12.1 and quits, it seems it would have to be with the ac/dc draining and not charging, bad ground. will let ya know if it gets figured out or I use it for target practice, I have already painted a red circle on it. Maybe I need a kubota!

You need to find the spec for the alternator output with it disconnected from the rest of the system.

Your DC output from the voltage regulator should be closer to 14 VDC than 13!

A fully charged battery is supposed to be about 12.6V.
There's no way 12.34 will charge a battery!!!!

You need to find what the stator is SUPPOSED to put out.
IF it's more than 34 VAC, you have a bad stator. No amount of wire tracing will change that!

well guys its up and running no gun needed after all.apparantly when the regulator was in the process of going bad it fried about a six in section of wiring of the main harness leading to the fuses in the loom. you could smell it but not see it. I am happy,happy I can go to work,walk behinds are great but its hot and i'm tired. by the way talking to the bobcat main headquarter they told me it could be the belts,(bad bearing causing increased amperage due to more resistance on pully system)stator harness,delay module or pto. who said girls can't fix stuff, sometimes it just takes awhile to figure it out.thanks again

I had same problem. Took it to a repairman and it now runs and cuts well but new problem is it has no power moving so slow. With or without pto. Any help out there please?
