Using a broken oven/stove range as a planter

I have a broken oven/stove that I would like to use as a planter. The bottom drawer is a no-brainer, and the glass top is an obvious surface to hold pots, but I'm having trouble picturing what to do about the oven part. If I leave the door on, it will be hanging right over the bottom drawer. Would I want to just remove the door? If anyone has some pics of "planted ovens" or just ideas, please share!

Would also love any input on "cooking puns to plant", like "hot" pink, or maybe strawberries planted in a pie plate on top, maybe a "hot" pepper planted in a sauce pan, that kind of stuff. TIA!

What a fabulous idea. Nice that it has a glass top. My mom has an old glass top oven in her garage...
I posted a link to an oven planter on flickr below. It is a double oven so they could use one drawer and then the door or the other oven.
Too bad the doors don't open sideways, you could use the oven for storage. Even with the door off you could use it to store things. And your flowers would hide the storage, just not anything too large so you could get it out without damaging your plants.
Can oven doors be pushed open from the inside? Just something to think about if there are kids around. If any one gets in you want them to be able to get out. If not I'd say take the door off or disable the latch. (At least they are not air tight like fridges.)

I was thinking if you used a piece of steel to hold the oven door part way open(screwed on both side of oven & door) & had a V shaped planter, probably have to make it out of redwood then flowers could be"hot from the oven" of course they would be red!! Jan

We have a Wolf range with the black burner pans. If I'm just spraying and wiping the tops (e.g if they're "dusty" from not seeing much use because we've been grilling a lot or bringing food in, or just lightly "schmutzy"), I use Perfect Kitchen (blue bottle, from BB&B) which was recommended by someone at the Wolf/SZ showroom. It is the only thing I've found so far that can clean without leaving streaks and smears. I find I get better results using it with a paper towels, though sometimes I'll use a microfiber if it's a clean one, and bone dry. For a more thorough or more necessary full cleaning, I remove my pans and wash them in the sink. If your top isn't removable, you can wash it in place, it's just more of a pain to rinse/remove residue. I usually squirt a little dishsoap on a blue scrub sponge (Palmolive is what we use) and sprinkle some Barkeeper's Friend (BKF) on the pans or on the sponge. Don't use the green scrubbies unless they were recommended by your stove manufacturer as those might scratch the enamel/porcelain. For stubborn areas and burnt or baked in grease spots (or if I've gone way too long between cleanings!), I spray the pans with Dawn Power Dissolver Gel, and let them sit for 15 minutes or so, and then scrub/rinse. I dry the pans with a dishtowel (Ritz-flemish Wonder towels are great and still dry things even when pretty damp) and I'm good to go 'til the next time!

Just to clarify, these old style ovens aren't made in this style anymore because people want microwaves and so often a microwave/vent is installed above the stove. Also current codes require that there be some kind of exhaust above the cooktop surface so either you have a dedicated hood or a micro/vent using the above the stove real estate. Do you want two ovens? If so there are ways to accomplish that depending on the size of your kitchen and what you want to use the second oven for. If you have the space, a wall oven or two wall ovens at ergonomic heights is the choice for most people with space. The closest ovens I have seen which replicate the function of the second above the range oven would be a Breville counter top oven. It comes in several sizes and depending on the size you would need a dedicated circuit. These perform really well and have more capacity than the upper oven in my old Caloric which is pictured above.

The technical issues are interesting but to remove stove top pollutants from your house its necessary to turn on the exhaust fan every time you turn the range on. I suspect most people only turn it on occasionally or when the air in the kitchen is uncomfortable. Extreme situations are better served by opening a window or door when its too late to capture pollutants. It seems inappropriate to judge exhaust systems by stricter standards than people use to determine when to turn them on. I keep turning the downdraft fans on and my wife turns them off (although she will often open the back door or climb on a stool to open a transom window) so the entire issue of exhaust fans in our house is moot.

I would like to thank everyone for their valuable input. I needed to know for certain using the range is a bad idea. Thank you for confirming that. As for everyone telling me what I should want, I know what I want, and I have my reasons. Someone asked for the reason I was changing,: my old wall oven and microwave are 30 years old, both are not functioning properly in the microwave is about 600 W. Time for a change while I'm redoing the kitchen. I've decided to go with the following arrangement, if anyone has any valuable input I would appreciate: at the bottom will be the 30 inch Summit gas oven. I didn't want to pay that much but I found it for about $1650 and am willing to pay that. On top of that will be the GE Advantium convection oven/microwave. On top of that will be a low profile 30 inch microwave by either KitchenAid or Whirlpool. The reason for the low profile microwave is that it is only 10 inches tall. The three units combined height fits my wall oven cavity with adequate space in between each piece. One thing I don't get is why the GE comes in a 120 V 15 to 20 amp model, and for about $500 more the same product but it runs along 240 V 30 amp (which is what I have) and the only other upgrade is a wire rack and a grill pan. How about planting it with herbs? Chives and Basil in pots on top. I agree with Sunnyca.. I would bolt a strap on the oven door and stove side wall to form a V..(can be open 12-14 inches) fill oven with a planter (maybe a small tote with drainage??) and dirt and maybe a trailing Rosemary that would trail over the door.

I would bolt a strap on the oven door and stove side wall to form a V..(can be open 12-14 inches) fill oven with a planter (maybe a small tote with drainage??) and dirt and maybe a trailing Rosemary that would trail over the door. I have a old Monarch electric stove with a soup pot in my yard. I have herbs in pots (and the soup pot) on top.. I was using the oven area for trowels and such. I never did take a picture of it so I will have to do that!

I'm wondering if you could take the over racks, somehow attach/weld them together to make a "trellis". Then prop them up against the side of the oven and plant nasturtiums of some other climber on them.

I'd look for old pots to plant in to put on the stove. I like sunnyca's idea of somehow holding the door partly open and pixie_lou's idea of the trellis made from oven racks. Would be cool with a plant overflowing out of the oven. Don't forget to add some cute salt & pepper shakers to the mix by letting them sit on top of the stove. Cute idea!
