Usually, how long do they make the cords for electric string trimmers? Thanks

They are usually about a foot to two feet long. You will need to buy an extension cord of appropriate length for your lawn.

That's very funny! I thought that they would make the cords at least 10' or longer. Who would have a one ft yard, although I understand that we can always buy extension cords? LOL

Anyway, i am not sure if I should get a cordless or stick with the corded one and buy more extensions? I heard that cordless trimmers tend to have chargers that are broken easily or have to be charged very frequently. What's your take on that?

Along with rustyJ comment all springs are made to certain tolerance. Meaning the height, diameter, and stiffness produced certain resistance. So measure your sping height. then stretch little at time to get the right resistance or spring pressure you desire to let the advance spool release one click at time when you lightly bump it. If you have to smack it on the ground usually the string will tie itself in knot and not release. If the spring is colasped enough it will release with the slightest bumping. So to make this short depending on the model and design. the spring has to be certain height to alow the right tension on the bump advance. Too weak (or Short) line comes out to easy. Too strong (spring height longer that it's suspose to be makes string hard to advance (providing the string is not knotted up on the spool which happens from time to time). All of us at one time or another has bumped it extremely harder thinking I didn't bump it hard enough when all it was the string became knotted and locked up on the spool reventing string advancement.

Recommendations for a replacement string trimmer

My electric Craftsman died after over 12 years. I thought about replacing it with another electric but my current yard is 300' by 120' so we have a cord length problem with electrics. I liked the no hassle situation with the electric. So I ended up buying a Cub Cadet Trimmer BC509 4-Cycle Trimmer. Mine came with both the string head and the blade, but I believe the same model comes with out the blade. I believe the head comes with multiple attachments in other model packages. The reason I bought it was that it was a 4 cycle engine. While it is a few oz. heavier than a 2cycle, there is no mixing of gas and oil, and I am not putting heavy oils into the fuel system to clog it up the fuel jets. It starts easy when done per the manual. Because it is more powerful than my old electric, the job takes about half as long. For about $200, I would highly recommend it. I have an ORC on my tractor. I probably couldn't get it back off it I wanted to. I was thinking about building a cutter head and using piano wire or guitar strings for the cutters. But I am not sure how they would hold up to cutting. Something like 3/8 cable is made up of several smaller strands of wire. What keeps it from fraying after a few hour's use. Maybe take a welder and fuse the ends so it doesn't fray. And that's awfully thick. More like beating the grass to death than cutting it. I don't have to worry about hitting anything solid. And I'm not looking to get a clean manicured look. Just something to keep the vegetation at bay. Use RoundUp around the house and outbuildings and such. But that's too expensive to use on fence rows and ditches. Once a month around the house is all it takes. I go through about 2 gallons of generic RoundUp a year. Pooh Bear

If her job is not too large, you might ask about some of the better cordless. I like good electrical power but I hate the danger of the cord. If she is use to using a corded trimmer, what are the Ã¢ÂÂMajor BrandsÃ¢ÂÂ that you know of or have had success with? Will any of the Major Small Engine Dealers handle corded trimmers vs Big Box Stores? I hope some experience users will share soon.

I have an 18V Black&Decker Lawn Hog cordless.

I'm not a big fan of Black&Decker, but this trimmer has served me well for two years. Plenty of power for most homeowners and a fresh battery lasts about 10 minutes, so between both batteries you have about 20 minutes of continuous run time. One battery trims around my house and garage twice.

Downside is you have to buy specific B&D string and if you have some thick stuff to trim you may find it underpowered. But probably no more so than a regular electric.

Despite the questionable B&D build quality, I love it and would recommend it to anybody for LIGHT homeowner use. If your trim times put you over 15 minutes I probably wouldn't consider it.

The only places I would use a string trimmer are the 7 bed borders and along the sidings around the house. The grass is not thick at all, yet the quantity of borders may take me some time. I have not had an electrical trimmer, so I don't know how long it would take to use one to trim all the beds. I manually but them now, and it takes hours to do it and hurt my back. I did not think of using an electrical one before, because even with hand scissors I cannot cut the grass against the rock well(rock borders for beds). A lot of times, the grass is totally touching the rocks.

One correction, mine is a GrassHog.

You should be able to easily trim up to the rocks, the string won't damage them.

If you buy from a big box store you may be able to return it if it doesn't work for you, but look at the fine print before you buy, many places may charge a restocking fee on some items.

You may also want to try renting one to see how long it takes you. Don't know if you can rent an electric one or not, but you should be able to rent a gas one. Just keep in mind than an electric will be easier to work with and you should get a bit more efficient with practice.
