Well, I guess what species depends on where you are and what is common in your particular yard.

Here, the biggest problems bird-wise with fruit are crows, robins, grackles, and starlings. It varies from crop to crop, though.

Animal wise, by far the biggest problem with fruit are squirrels, which like to take immature fruit for the seeds.

A lot of people put netting over their fruit, to protect it from the birds. I don't since I plant a lot, some for me and most for the birds :)

As for bees, try putting in some catmint, coneflowers, lavender and butterfly bushes. This will bring in bumblebees, which are probably too big for the birds to bother. If the fox doesn't work out, barn kitties will take care of most pests...and probably keep the birds a little further from your garden.

We have so many Birds some of them are native and some are migrating Birds. I discovered that they are trying to nest in my Blueberry Bushes. I use Bird nets which works very good. As for squirrels I have 2 jack Russel terriers who hate squirrels and they chase them out of my yard. I have 25 trees and 60X60 vegetable garden. Beside that I have the wild rabbets but the dogs chase them away.

How much damage do birds do?

They got every cherry off of 6 cherry trees this year. These are 16 foot tall trees, not dwarfs. They took all the sweet cherries and all the pie cherries.

They damaged apples on all the trees. The amount of damage varies by tree. They ruined all the Cortlands long before they were ripe, and they ruined about 1/3 of the fujis, again damage starts way before the apples can be harvested.

They damaged 100% of my nectarine crop (I got 3 nectarines) 70% of my peach crop, and 80% of the apricots. The only reason I had apricots this year is because I picked them green.

They will take 100% of a strawberry crop, going into the plants and walking around underneath them to get the fruit, pecking and breaking the skin on every berry that they don't actually eat.

They will peck at and ruin an entire grape crop and strip raspberries bare.

I got blueberries for 2 years before the birds discovered they were edible and then the birds stripped the entire crop in one day-- not ripe, of course, so I couldn't beat the birds to them

They either eat the fruit, or peck it and ruin it long before the fruit is ripe.

I have many varieties of birds that come to feed: wrens, robins, blue jays, mockingbirds, sparrows, and many I don't know the names of. There are not many birds that will not eat fruit. If it's got feathers and it isn't a raptor, it probably eats fruit.

When there is fruit, they make a racket that calls in birds from all over the area. So if you think your fruit is safe because you don't have many birds, think again.

Also, they learn that there is food at your place and they put you on their schedule and come back year after year, in increasing numbers each year.

At one point, I did get a nice crop of raspberries because the neighbor's cat was a bird killer and discovered he could hid in the raspberry vines and kill a lot of birds. He was fast enough to kill them before they could eat much.

I would prefer to not kill the birds. Many of those fruit eaters are also bug eaters, so they are serving a purpose in the garden. But if you expect to get berries, think about netting.

I came across a flier the other day that I had picked up at some trade show where the guy was advertising a device that would trigger a burst of water when a sensor indicated a racoon (or other critter) was in the area at night....sort of like those security lights that turn on when someone walks by at night.
I don't know how it would work as I haven't heard anyone speak from first hand experience.

As for birds, especially crows, who attack in the daytime.....that is tougher
the cherry growers in Eastern washington used the sounds of very loud shotgun blasts that sounded almost like explosions to scare the birds away during picking season....that would not work in most areas not so remote from the public.
Most people have a slight problem but not a big problem with birds....so, just hope you are not in one of the areas with a big problem, I guess.

At my last house I thought I was going to have a bad bird problem because they were really active while the blue berries were blooming (mostly catbirds). But by the time the berries were ripe the nesting season was over and the birds had sort of wandered off. I did lose some berries but nothing that bad. The first year I panicked and draped bird netting over the whole row of bushes. I would come home from work and find birds trapped inside the netting, or box turtles snagged where the netting touched the ground and sometimes snakes tangled up in the netting - I happen to like reptiles and need all the snakes to help control the voles so it became too upsetting to deal with all the death... I just gardened without the nets.

Now I am at a new house with a new garden and I will probably come up with some sort of netting to cover the fruit bushes but I will handle the bottoms along the ground safer for reptiles.

I grow blueberries in our yard, in Madison, Wisconsin. We lose some fruit to the local birds every year, but so far, its been only 10% of the crop. We have bluejays, cardinals, sparrows, and robins. I think the cardinals are the most persistent. If it gets too bad, I will cover the shrubs with nonwoven garden cover fabric. Its not very expensive, and it should minimize trapping and killing of birds.

Oregon, I had no idea that bird damage could get so pervasive. Have you been able to come up with anything beside netting so you can get some fruit? Does netting work of your tree fruit? What birds eat the most fruit?

In zone 3/4 we are getting ready for winter. I just cut down all of my fall bearing raspberries and mulched heavily.

To keep the mice and voles out of the blueberries and summer raspberries, I mowed all of the surrounding grass very short. I also used a weed burner to remove any fringe weeds ands brush piles. I hope this keeps them out of the fruit patch this winter.
