Fairy garden in the making

I decided to take the scrubby side of my house(the side between other houses) with the air conditioner etc. Last year I put my potting bench there and started adding plants when I thinned them out of other gardens. Well, this year I decided to add in the old wheelbarrow(also free) and thought it might be a nice location fora fairy garden. I was thinning out again today and started trying to add things to the wheelbarrow to get started.

Its hard to tell what the fairy is in front of, but I would add a small mirror with some pea gravel around it to simulate a pond.
Then I'd add a fairy house, with a stone path leading to the pond.
Lastly, it needs a shade tree (or two) and a tire swing (or hammock)

Very cute idea.

What a great idea for a simple side yard! I like the idea of the fairy garden in the wheelbarrow. You will definitely have to find her a little home. I have seen birdhouses at Michaels that look a little like a church with actually working doors at the bottom. The bird hole could be turned into a window. Or find a plain birdhouse and buy or create a fairy door for it. Little stepping stones instead of a path might be cool too. Watch for miniature furniture and maybe little animal figurines. Rocks are also a good choice ... they are good for fairies to hide behind. In a garden junk book I have, the woman made a toad house out of a lenght of pvc pipe ... maybe 8" in diameter ... that she covered with stones. She topped it with a funnel that she painted to look like copper. I think she put a little bead or something on the tip of the funnel. It ended up looking like a little castle tower. I like your bonsai-like tree too!

Well I gave up on my fairy garden, after I found out that moomin mama wouldn't need a ladder for cleaning the second story windows. I'm really amazed at nack you've got for this, Purple. Even if I'm not commenting every time, I really enjoy your pictures. Keep 'em coming! For the bricks, you would have to make sure that you use a VERY thin paint if you go by the "shake'n'bake" method. Otherwise, I fear it would run down at the bottom while drying, in a way that would create a small tip on each brick. spray paint would be possible, as long as you keep a good distance to the bricks. Perhaps you could dry them on one of those plates, that little girls use for making pearl plates? -After they have dried you could "effect" paint them with a thin layer of slightly different colour pigment paint (not acrylics) on the sides that face out: put some thin paint on a flat surface (a lid or something) then dip a piece of sponge in the paint, then dap it on a piece of paper to get the worst excess off, and finally dab it onto the brick. You could also use this technique for the burgers. -For the illusion of searing, it's hard to get a brush that is thin enough... even a no 2 could easily make too fat chunks of paint, but perhaps if you take a string of hair, and strech it out between your fingers then dip it in: a: thin paint, and run it along the direction you want the line (still stretched out), or b: use a thicker paint, and remove some of the excess paint on a piece of paper, and run it along where you want the line on your burger (also with the hair still stretched out). Perhaps it could be done with cheese cutting wire, which is a bit thicker. I have yet to see a no 1 brush in an art supply store, but perhaps they would have it in a hobby supply store (I always wonder how people who paint tin soldiers makes those small dots for eyes). VG

Google 'Fairie Collectables' and you will see tons of different stores that sell Fairies. I've seen people use a tree stump and bird cage too. I like the examples of the 'Fairie Houses of Ann Arbor". I also put the Fairie doors on my door frames for my Suburban Fairies that live here from St.Pat's Day until Halloween. (They miagrate in the winter months.) If you look in the dollhouse sections of Michaels and Hobby Lobby you may see some miniature things that you can use. Sheet moss looks really nice on whatever you choose the dwelling to be made of. As others will probably suggest, water when the soil is dry to a knuckle. If your climate is warm/hot/dry, I'd probably suggest daily watering for a few weeks for such small plants(very small root zones), but it also depends how quickly your soil drains, etc. Generally smallish conifers can probably go a couple days between watering in warm/hot conditions but unless you're in a heavy-slow draining clay, they can probably be watered daily with no ill effects. Woo hoo, received my box from Nikki yesterday and the post office was kind and didn't break anything. She sent two pretty glittery fairies resting their heads on mushrooms, a Valentine shelf sitting monkey, a yummy candy bar, tulip bulbs, a little gift book and several packs of coneflower seeds. I found a really cute Fairy House from Collections Etc. It was very reasonably priced and would be the right scale for your garden. I also got a windmill from them for my Fairy Garden. Good luck with your garden. It looks nice.

I like the fact that your fairy garden is portable, so if you want to change it to another location, it will be easy! Your hostas are looking good too!

The tips and ideas are so interesting to me because I've got an old wheel barrel that's been planted a few years and needs to be re-done. Been planning to put a fairy village there but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Love the shape of your wheel barrel, Sam, it's got a good, quaint shape and feeling, and will help the setting a lot. Please share pics as it evolves! Maybe I'll get mine going soon and I will too. This is inspiring, thanks! ~tenderlee

Now I know what to do with my old wheelbarrow. I have wanted a fairy garden for a while, but the cats tear them up if I put them on the ground. I can even make a little twig fence to go around it to deter the cats from jumping in. Thanks for the great idea.

Thats a great place for a fairy garden...one thought tho...make sure the rain runoff from roof does not just drench the thing and ruin it for you.

I really like the idea of using a wheelbarrow for a fairy garden. I think fairy gardens sort of evolve as you find more things to put in them and the plants grow. If the plants in the 'barrow don't get enough light in that space you can just wheel it out to a sunny spot for a few days.

You might make some tiny furniture or a gazebo out of twigs if you like doing that sort of thing.
