fading bowling ball

I put my bright pink bb in my garden 2 days ago, and now it's dark. It looks bruised. :(

Maybe if I take it out of the sun it will turn pink again.

It's also kind of soft. I'm disappointed because it's a swirly pattern, and looked pretty as-is.

*sigh*

Anybody else have this problem?

ew, the pics are too big. I'll resize them.

The scuff marks on the bb are from my daughter's friends who were here a few days ago. They found the bb and were tossing it on the driveway, until I whimpered (loudly) and asked them to be nice to my new garden ornament.

I have not put a naked bb in the garden but I'm interested if anyone else has had this problem. I have a purdy pink one to put in the garden too. I'd hate for it to fade!!!

I painted some lady bug bowling balls and left them in the sun a few days and it didn't seem to fade them. I'm sure if I'd of left them longer they would of though. Not sure who I'm giving them to besides my GD and Sis so I have them on my deck. I think someone on here inspired me so I was telling my sister about them and she showed up with 5 balls. The ouside green ones were not totally painted but the three center ones were. If anyone knows who started painting the lady bug balls, let's give them credit.

I was going to give you the instructions I've been collecting, but see you got a teriific link that tells you nearly everything. Did it say to get 6 and a half bags of half marbles to do a regular sized bowling ball? Also I thought this person I'm quoting below had good information on preparation: "I paint mine with Fusion paint for plastics, or I use a plastic primer first and then a spray paint of my choice. I let the ball cure for 2 weeks per the can instructions, then I spray 3-4 layers of an outdoor clear poly on it and let that cure for another day or two, then it can go outside. I also spray it with clear poly every spring and bring them inside for the winter as they could crack depending on what the ball was made of. Make sure you get the waxy coating off the ball first by washing it with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution or rubbing alcohol." Hope some of this helps! We're anxious to see what you do! I want to do my first one too!

If you have a large plant pot or planter just flip it over and put the bowling ball on the bottom which becomes the top. How about a tree stump? Old astray stands. Large candle holders. Short stool or ladder. Very large pipe cut to lenght wanted. How about a broken shovel handle, of which I have many.A section of CB Tower with the ball at the top and clematis or roses growing up. Great BB! I love the pink butterflies! And adorable in your flamingo garden. All in all you get an A+ in MY book! As for faded flamingos, you can always spray paint them with Krylon Fusion paint for plastic. I haven't noticed that it fades, so maybe you wouldn't need to repaint them yearly and turn them into "blobs" like excessfroufrou and her grandma did! (I'm LOLing imagining big pink blobs on top of spindly flamingo legs...LOL!) I've got a flamingo story to share...We lived in a "fancy" neighborhood one time and a new family who owned the local biker bar moved in. They put up an entire flock of pink flamingos and some neighbors were so horrified they started a petition to force them to remove them. Now, these people could have bought and sold ALL of the rest of us 10 times over, but the snooty neighbors were simply "above" bikers in their minds. When we refused to sign their silly petition, they got mad at us, too. Apparently they shared the petition with the owners of the flock who laughed it off. None of us realized how upset the anti-flamingo crowd was until one night somebody stold all the flamingos and CHOPPED THEM up into little pieces and threw them in the street in front of the house they came from. It could have gotten ugly, but the bikers were nice people who weren't looking for a fight. Nobody ever found out who actually "killed" the flamingos! At Christmas that year, Hallmark came out with the cutest flamingo ornament. I bought one for each of the neighbors...including the very nice neighbors who owned the biker bar! And, we have had flamingos of one type or another in our yard ever since!

A colorwash is a wash of acrylic paint over the grout in whatever intensity you wish. This is the first time I tried this on a piece that I hope will survive outdoors and not fade. I just couldn't get the deep color I wanted by coloring the grout alone. To get the intense cobalt blue I washed over bright white grout. A friend suggested that I do a colorwash right away to get the color to sink into the wet grout and then do a second coat, which I did. It was also suggested to me to use a good quality acrylic paint that I could get it at Michaels in their better materials section. The UV spray is an ultra violet spray (purchased at Jo Anns) that I'm putting on in hopes of holding the bright blue in the colorwash from fading in the sunlight. I'm rather deciding to use this on my porch to keep it out of direct sunlight, but otherwise I'm really happy with it. Thanks for your comments and questions. This is always fun!

I have a red/white/blue swirly BB (naked)that has been outside for 2 years- all seasons, no fading to it , I make sure the holes are on the down side though, so it doesn't freeze water in the holes. possibly the material yours is made of is "allergic" to the sun, if its soft also.

I have two pretty, untouched BB's, holes down in my garden. They are no longer high gloss, but they have not changed color like yours did. Mine have been there for several years now, even through MN winters. I also have one I put glass marbles on and a penny fountain BB. They come in in the winter.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the material a bb is made of makes a difference. I won't bother to decorate this one, because I have a feeling it won't hold onto anything.
I saw a couple more at my new favorite weekend barn sale, and I might get them. But I'll check them out to see what they're made of. Also might visit my local bowling alley to see if they have any cast-offs. Those are probably sturdier.

The holes of my pink bb are down in the garden. The first photo is to show the underside that was not exposed to the sun and is still the original color. ;)
