Tire question

Hi everyone! I hope someone can help me. I know I have seen people in here who have made planters out of tires. Well, I made my first ones last weekend. Even got the stubborn things turned inside out! ugh! My question is what kind of paint did you use on them? Thanks!

Hi, I painted parts of a tire with industrial oil base 'alkyd' paint and it hasn't been damaged at all by weather. It's used on fire hydrants, farm equipment, and most industrial equipment. HD and Lowes carry this paint. Latex primer and paint (exterior) would probably work. You could experiment on the tire pieces that were cut off. If you don't have any of these paints, they should all show up in the 'oops' section of paint departments really cheap. Hope that helps. Linda

When I do my tire planters I simply use the walmart brand spray paint and give it a generous coat of clear-coat. I've had my tire planters for well over a year now and there hasn't been any cracking or chipping.

Hello all. Hi bestf100 and fordtech. I have not had to replace any LawnBoy mower tires yet. Still have plenty tread. I have not had to replace any cables yet. Ineresting question bestf100 brought up about " Do these tires wear our at a faster rate than other mowers?" I noticed that many of the "restored" vintage LawnBoys already have "slick" tires. My question: Did LawnBoy roll these vintage mowers off the production line with the tires already without tread? Good day.

If you can only afford to replace two tires, put the good ones up front for front wheel drive. About 70% of the braking effort is up front for front wheel drives. You also need the best taction tires on the driven wheels (front ones for your case) to keep going in snow. On front wheel drives, the front tires wear down much faster than the rears. However, its best to have the same type of tires on all four wheels for autos. Note: In my opinion, the older GM Citation/Phoenix cars had too great of percentage of braking effort porportioned to the rear wheels. This caused these vehicles to tend to swap ends when the brakes were applied on icy surfaces. This statement supports putting the greater anti-skid tires on the rear which is the opposite of my recommendation above. However, if the braking effort is properly porportioned, I think that it is best to put the better tires up front.

Replace it in such a way that it would fit your expectations if you were the second owner. In other words, if you had to buy one of these cars second hand that got turned in from a lease, what would you expect to find if you needed the spare?

The rubber and organic based fibers and cords do deteriorate with time and temperature, however, I would not expect steel belts to loose strength. Those age mostly from flexing. As for adding air, even the best of tires may loose air over a period of time, say one year. Air loss is a function of the tire's inner liner and the integrity of the seal with the rim. In a few instances, the metal wheel may be the leaker instead of the tire. A two piece, steel wheel, with a sealer between the halves that is welded together has been known to leak. Also, tire pressure will change without any leakage due to temperature change. A tire that was filled to 30 psi at 70 F will reduce to 27 psi at 20 F. (It follows the perfect gas law, but the temperatures must be converted to the absolute scale to make the calculation.) If you checked the tire pressure in cold weather, you may not have had a leak at all, but was seeing a temperature effect. Your tires are at least 7 yrs old. The decision to replace is up to you. If there are no checking marks on the sidewalls and the rubber is not dull and dusting, those may be good for a little longer. However, to be on the safe side, replacing is recommended. If the tires are not steel belted, then a replacement recommendation becomes greater.

Yes they were difficult to turn inside out. The first two I did my boyfriend had to help me turn them. The second two I did were impossible (even for the two of us). I know the more worn the tire the easier to flip inside out.

Ok...I think I get it now. From looking at the tutorial,(thanks for posting the link) it looks like you do the cutouts then flip the tire over and pull the edges that were cut upward while forcing the center downward.

I have one more question about what to plant in them. Does the rubber leach out any chemicals into the potting soil? Is it ok to plant vegetables in them?

Julie I was looking at some of those links and one individual did post a warning. I don't know how true it is, so you may want to do some research before using it for vegtables.

I was looking thru the links too and saw the one about chemicals leaching into the soil. They look great as planters.
Another one of the links takes you to a site where they make them look like pottery!

So many ideas...too little time!

I remember the tire planters were very popular when I was a kid. Seemed almost every yard had one. But the one link I loved were the bird hanging planters made from tires! It was a link at the site with the tire planter directions on it. Below is a direct link. I'd love to know how they made the beak and got the eyes in.
