honda hrt 216 sda engine problem

My Honda HRT 216 SDA lawnmower starts up quite easily, runs for about 5-10 mins and then stalls. Starts right back up again and then stalls within a minute or so and will continue to do this. It has new gas, the gas tank is clean, the gas lines are clear, the float chamber is clean, and fuel flows into the float chamber freely. Carb looks clean, air filter clean, although the plug was sooty.

What's up with this?

Maybe the fuel cap is not venting?

stalls immediately or sputters like it's running out of gas and then dies?

can you re-start it instantly or do you have to wait a minute?

* run it with your air breather off and have some spray carb cleaner in your hand. when it starts to die, mist come carb cleaner in the carb and see if that keeps it going. if it does, you have a lack of fuel problem.

A anti-seize grease would be best, these are typically a grease with lead graphite so if you do use it keep if off of you. More important is to use some kind of grease and go back and clean and re-grease every year. key direction should be self evident once the slot in the shaft is clean. Round is down. When spring and key are in place you should be able to press the key flush with the shaft. This allows the sloped side of the pinion notch's to ramp down the key letting the pinion lock when turned one direction and spin when turned the other direction. This way when drive is not engaged the wheel will free sping while being pushed forward. It also allows a differential action of allowing the outside wheel travel further then inside wheel when make a turn.

Know that the belt can look ok on these and still slip. You could try also just creating a bit more tension on the cable temporarily to see if it improves. The trans RNR means it all comes apart. The wheels , arms, housing baffle etc If you go that route, it would be best to have your new trans sitting there and ready to go in. You would need to post the complete model / serial to know for sure- (or maybe check plano power) as generally the transmissions do not have servcie parts available for these.

I listened to the video a few times. I couldn't confirm the popping was from the intake, but it sounded like it was. If it were mine, I would remove the inline tank filter if it has one and verify routing of the kill wire. Since you swapped coils, I assume that the wire ends were also swapped. But it really sounds like a sticking valve yet. What is the history on the mower? Has it sat? If varnish is present on the stem, the official Honda way is to heat the stem. Could it be a loose baffle in the muffler? I've not ever see one. If something else comes to mind, I'll give a shout.

Unfortunately , the rear drive transmission is a fixed integral unit . If "The Guy " who replaced and sourced your replacement tranny was reputable then he should have checked the pulley bearing free play . The pulley is a part of the transmission . There will be some tension adjustment in this unit for belt wear and engagement set point user preference . Ensure your belts number is correct , then ensure you have proper tension. no more than 1/2" deflection measured between the pulleys . I have serviced dozens of these models , Strong and simple drive , if adjusted properly . If over tensioned the tranny bearing on the pulley will fail . Unfortunately it is a sealed unit . You should also check the pulley runnout it may be tweaked and the alignment may be axile rather than radial misaligned and can be trued easily !

That is exactly what mine is doing (same mower and engine). I did tear the carb apart at the beginning of last year and cleaned it (except the float)and it ran great for till fall. Getting the carb off the mower is a total pain.

When it starts to die and I choke it it will come back to life in a few seconds but 1 or 2 minutes it's doing the same thing. I did replace the gas cap but no luck. What now?

Pull the tank and clean (1 screw and 3 nuts), flush out the line and re-clean the carb. If yours has studs, lock the nuts together and remove them and the carb pops right off.
