Fairy House Update

I made this Fairy house door and porch. The Fairies left last Fall and did not return this spring! : (

However, Jacque my little French Gnome moved in. I kept thinking he was going to fall so I made him a bamboo ladder using toothpicks, bamboo strips, and rope. He still insists on hanging around and doing risky tricks but thank goodness he now has a safer way to climb up! Thank you again Luna for sending me my little French Garden Buddy for Summer Junk Jamboree 2009.

This is very interesting. I suspect he tried to sell his formula to some big company but was not successful. (Imagine computers or tv sets that looked like fairy houses on the outside, lol.) Sure would be useful to us crafters, if its not too toxic. If it looks good, maybe we could order ingreadients regionally and split the cost (EG if any one else in NH VT or MA wanted them I could be in such a group.) I guess I don't object to paying for the formula through his dvd's. When you invent something and spend a lot of time, naturally you want to get paid. Right now I have too many other projects and winter is coming, but maybe in the spring... Kathy

Heather, I am so glad that Sebastian enjoyed the box. I had fun putting it together with Rhiannon,even though she kept taking things out and saying Mine, Mine. Pitch a Story FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Many craft recipes call for Ivory Soap Flakes. Unfortunately, the company stopped making this product in 1993. Soap, in general, helps keep paint from staining hands, clothes and other surfaces and it also helps paint made with gritty, powdered tempera go on paper more smoothly. Those testing and developing the recipes found that flakes were preferable to liquid soap because it kept the paints from becoming too runny. In addition, some recipes need the "fluffy" consistency of the flakes versus powdered soaps like Dreft. You can make your own soap flakes by using any pure vegetable soap and grating it with a cheese grater. Ivory soap is about the cheapest pure soap, but you can experiment with different types to get different smells and even colors. Be careful if using soaps scented with extracts like peppermint with very young children, since it seems to make them just want to eat the paint. I find that laying the soap flat on its widest side and using the side of the grater with the long openings (2 inch slits) is more effective than using the sides with small holes. As far as the citric acid goes, I found mine at the pharmacy, I think even Walmart carries it.

Thanks, SILVA. This was one of those crazy ideas that developed sorta suddenly, when the owner of the nursery where I have sold some pieces suggested I make some fairy houses that everyone was talking about. At first I said flat out NO. Then I toyed w/the idea, and thought it'd be fun. Well, of course, like everything I do - it turned out larger than planned, and I had such fun working it and liked it so much that I decided to keep it for myself.

Jan- The toothpicks are the pins that hold each ladder rung to the rope. Every part was thickly painted with wood glue and sealed with polyurethane.

Jacque is sure enjoying himself over there! His buddies who are by my computer are soooooo jealous! One of them is giving me a dirty look as if to say, "You don't make any fun stuff for us like that!" I guess I better start collecting bamboo strips and rope ...

I'm so glad he has brought you such joy! He is a fun character when he behaves.

If we could bottle that magic that flows from your fingers, girl, we'd all be rich!!! That is just adorable. I love the sign, and you even got him a mini pumpkin and is that a little trike on the porch or are my eyes just tired tonight???? You are a great gnome-mama, you take such good care of them, remind Jacque he needs a parachute!
Oh, and love the gnome house number, 2 cute!!!
BTW-glad to see ya back, from 1 GRIT to another!!

Daisey-u-doll, Jacque came bouncing out the door and kicked over the tricycle and did a high flip before catching himself on the edge of the porch. I witnessed it with my camera at dusk.

The neighborhood children left the acorn on the Fairy porch. I painted it orange and made it a Jack-o-lantern on the other side. By sitting it in the acorn husk, I can just turn it around to be a Happy Halloween Pumpkin in October. The local children stop on their way home from school to see if they can catch a Fairy coming or going. I think Jacque has made them content, that the walls of "Ms Susie's Empty Nest Cottage" are indeed alive with magic fun.

Luna- I have found that Gnomes will just play with anything. You can make them a tapeze bar out of chop sticks and they will thumb their nose and blow raspberries at you but then later you'll see them playing and having a ball. That is what my little snotty French Gnome dose to me. ;)
