Ideas for metal fan blades???

So I guess I'm buying these this week. Whoops. Thought they were interesting but other than the obvious flowers has anyone done anything really cool with old metal fan blades?

Very interesting because each set is different.
I brought home one set from CT this summer. I was planning on making a flower, but I , too, am open to other ideas !

Yes, it doesn't appear there any two alike. He must have collected them. I'm buying them all for $30 but wondering why. lol

I have one hanging outside my bathroom door..It is country blue, with flowers painted at the top, and a wood cut-out of a toilet at the bottom. I have done them before with Bath at the top and an old fashioned tubful of bubbles at the bottom. They also have eyelet lace glued around the edge. For outside ponds, etc--a fish painted at the large end, with bubbles riseing, and 'pond here' at the top-with arrow pointing. Or 'lake' or pool'.....

15 years of fan blade junk which I wouldn't have even thought of until we were working on our vaulted ceiling. I looked down and saw the tops of my fan blades and was shocked. They were black black. The best thing to use is Goof Off. I tried everything else mentioned above and none of it worked. I had some Goof Off in my laundry room and it took that sticky tarry black stuff right off my fan blades without any damage. I sprayed each blade and by the time I got back around to the first blade I was able to get the first layer off. I sprayed it again and worked on the next blade. The 2nd time around the rest just wiped right off and they looked brand new. Good Off works like magic. The only warning I would give is put a towel or cloth down underneath your fan on the floor. The Goof Off over-spray is very slippery and I almost wiped out on my tile floor.

Hi Phonegirl, I'm glad you like my chairs. I never really thought about it but I guess I come real close to painting everyday. I seem to fit it in in the evenings. The things I've been painting lately are something different for me. I'm always anxious to try a new idea I come up with and the fan blades don't take that long to do. Being in Florida during the winter makes it hard to get too much done though. There's so many outdoor activities. I brought lots of sign boards and wooden trays with me to paint. I was hoping to find time to get a head start during the winter on signs for my craft show in the fall. That way I wouldn't be that busy in the summer because I too love to plant flowers and work in my garden. But my fan blades have been so popular that most of what I painted I've sold or given away. I had my chairs, that didn't sell during last falls show, at a store back north for the winter and most of them sold. So I picture another busy summer. I'm seriously thinking of doing just a few chairs and more signs and fan blades. But I'm sure once I get home I'll get started on some chairs again. Gail

My advice is to stop immediately. That cloud of smoke is the best clue that your idea is not going to work. The blade might be loose, or mounted crooked, or wobbling----makes little difference---it is DANGEROUS!!!!!! Get the correct equipment---a circular saw is much better, and you can use a speed square for a guide to get straight cuts.

Paint them like flowers mount them on posts int the garden.

Oh my what a find! I decopaged flower pictures on a fan with outdoor modpodge. You could also make a sculpture out of several of them grouped together. Good luck and let us know what your do with them! Carol

I'm toying with the idea in my head of some sort of big wind chime and hang it from my back porch ceiling. But I'd have to figure out what would make it chime, how to put it all together and so on. But that's sort of where my mind is at now. I haven't even picked them up yet. lol

I put one on a post just to have it turn in the wind!
I set another old 'stand' fan--with the cover removed-
out too. I painted each blade a solid color! Those blades
were plastic and a hard wind turned it over and broke
some corners off. It still turns, and is now weighted down.
just not as 'pretty'!
I use the wire covers as 'baskets' to plant in.....

I would have bought them too!!!

Oh yes whirly gigs! Painted fantastic bright whimsical colors. I love the rusty bases in the first picture too.
