A Wine Cork Trivet

I recently surprised my wife Carol with this wine cork trivet. I've been saving our wine corks through the years and created this trivet for her with the corks. Carol loves it! The trivet sits on our patio table. I'm also planning on making a birdhouse made from wine corks. Enjoy! Kirk

I've found that the compost-ability of wine corks depends on the terroir. On the one hand, the 1968 Bordeaux Chateau Margaux, the Montrachet 1978 from Domaine de la RomanÃ©e-Conti, yer 2004 Domaine d'Escausse La Croix Petite, Gaillac, an' them 1999 and 2000 Giacomo Marengo La Commenda, Tenuta del Fondatore Chianti Riserva compost pretty good. But don't even try with the 2003 Domaine Chante Cigale Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Those corks will be gumming up your tiller, sticking to your pitchfork tines so ya gotta scrape them off constantly, and popping up in your potting soil for years.

Call the wine distributors (try to find the best one as they fly all over the world and get some neat corks)for you area and other cities around you should you need alot, also wine clubs. I did a table top covered in glass and they were all happy to help. I agree with Barb...drink some and maybe relax in the tub with candles flickering.

You can probably buy new ones fairly cheaply from a "make your own wine" place. They might save used ones for you too although they might not have many used. Why not call one near you and ask or ask a nearby restaurant that serves wine, or the place where people return their used bottles? (Many people bring them back with the corks stuck in them.)

Igloo- I was searching for something (can't remember what now, becuase I found this fun thread...gee how often does that happen on GW......). Anyways, back to the point! I have two ideas for you, one is in my current very sad, very much falling aprt kitchen, I have one thing I actually like! And that is the chalkboard that I painted directly on the wall, and then "framed" with cover molding, and then glued corks onto the cove! They fit perfectly, it looks great, and you can use push pins on it to stick notes on there. Could be fun for the little guy too, since it frames a chalkboard. My other idea which I have been saving for, seriously, 10 years or so, is to make knobs for cabinets or furniture out of champagne corks!! You just screw through the front (pre-drill)and attach by going through the wood!! One other idea is to slice the corks and make little pads for the bottoms of furniture. BTW, I ran out of room on the chalkboard a long time ago....

Very nice Kirk! Can you tell us how you did it? It looks like you had to make the whole thing from scratch, because the corks fit so perfectly!

Thanks for the nice compliments! Countrygrl, I originally received a kit for making the trivet but couldn't fit all of my corks in just right. So, using the idea, I made a pattern with the corks first, then built a frame around it, attaching the corks to a thin piece of wood for the back. I thought one could make something similar, using a deeper picture frame... It was a lot of fun, choosing the best corks. Kirk

I would love it if my husband would make something neat like that for me...but his boxed wine doesn't have corks!

Hey, I like it! My dad made something like that for me from Charles Shaw corks with a redwood frame and engraved a tag that said "Two Buck Chuck." I treasure it so I hardly use it. Great minds think alike.

You have a nice balance of pattern there!

I've made bulletin boards out of a lot of my leftover corks. Given some as gifts & have one in the kitchen. They make great gifts when you can make them out of the corks (wines) that you know the receiver enjoys.

Ladies and Gents...if you do give away a "cork" gift, make sure it goes to someone you really love. If you notice, even good wines rarely have real cork these days; a plastic look alike is about as close as it gets. I have saved some over the years and now have them displayed in an old mason jar. Glad I have them!!

(PS...not sure what's going on here right now...but I keep trying to move my cursor with my mouse, but the "hand" pops up as if there is a link under my message. Strange.)

Great project, love the look,like a log cabin quilt,lol! My sis mentioned that she missed her huge wine cork collection out of things she lost in the storm,lol!! And yes,weird, we don't drink wine,but get bottles from my sisters and I have noticed that the corks are sometimes plastic!

Awesome.. Love it!!!! Also, Two Buck Chuck Wine was rated number one recently so its not just cheap in price it also beat out some really pricey bottles of wine too!!! We drink beer here so I don't have any corks to collect)-: I think I have seen a place somewhere that you can buy corks. Maybe a craft store? Can't remember. Hows your brother doing Kirk? I have been thinking of you all day.

Great trivet! I am a closet cork saver myself. When my daughter used to bar tend she saved loads. I have almost a 30 gallon bag filled with them. My husband thinks I am nuts! I made a wreath and a corkboard, but I like the trivet best. Very practical! AND you can see it every day!

I have a huge one (12x12) I bought from a winery on a wine tour last summer. I love it, but the corks are all the same,
they have that wineries name on them, I love how yours are all different. I'm going to save my corks and give mine a makeover! thanks for the idea.....your trivet is beautiful!

That is a great trivet... if you go to gardenjunk.org there is a photoshow there of the 2007 San Fransisco Flower and Garden show... there is some great artwork there done with corks...stepping stones, etc. have a look...
