Dethatching newish lawn or not?

Hi there,

We live in Southern Ontario Canada

In the summer of 2011 we had our backyard redone new soil, old grass out and new sod put down.We also put up a fence.

This spring we are noticing we have what we thought was dead grass which were later were told by my mum that it's thatch. She suggested cutting it short and getting a rake and dethatching it. We have cut it short but have yet to dethatch.

Questions:

Is it okay to dethatch newish sod so soon? I am worried as from what I have read and videos I have seen it's very harsh on the lawn and I would hate to ruin it when we paid a lot for the new lawn.

I have heard about getting a machine to do it but also it can power rake it or totally dethatch, which is better.

I have also read may be irrigation where you poke holes and let water in better. But it's not time to water I wouldn't think?

My husband thought it was just dead grass but my mum said no. I am worried we will ruin our lawn. I need advice before my husband goes ahead with this. We don't know anything about lawn care.

We get snow and frost so i am guessing we will get thatch every year.

What to do or not do, advice please! Thank you!
