Persimmon and Jujube scionwood
Comments (17)For those of you interested, I have Giant Fuyu (Hana Gosho) and Jiro scionwood I could part with this spring but in very limited amounts. I also have a Tigertooth jujube but unfortunately I already pruned the thing out of impatience. I'm pretty sure Roger Meyer ships not only bareroot grafted jujubes but scionwood as well (with sealing tape too if you request it). I've done a veeery extensive amount of research on how to grow persimmons and only a select few can be planted in zone 6 without having to worry about them, but i'm sure most all varieties (except hachiya) can be left alone once they're mature. All persimmons will benefit from a good mulching and some burlap, especially while they're young. Saijo's got to be hands-down the most cold-hardy variety there is if your winters are that brutal, Great Wall I've heard does well too, but it's more ornamental than for taste. I've also heard that Chocolate (Tsurunoko) can take the winters in zone 6 provided there aren't any severe winter winds, plus it's to die for (so I've heard, ordered a tree so I can test it myself ^-^). Also look into the PVNA types, as they're all very sought out for their taste: Chocolate, Nishimura Wase (coffecake), and Maru. Keep in mind you need a pollinator to ensure they'll be non-astringent, Giant Fuyu and Chocolate are great pollenizers. Giant Fuyu's so good it's worth growing on it's own just for it's extremely sweet and crunchy fruit. I've no clue where to find scionwood for these varieties but ask some avid persimmon gardeners in California if they have any, there's a good chance you'll find some :)...See MoreMy persimmons after the winter ....
Comments (0)Hi all forum members, I`d like to share some information concerning plants I have in my garden. We had very strong winter. Temperatures we had were very low - minus 30-35 C during 2 weeks, and minus 15-20-25 C during almost all winter. My inground persimmon (Jiro and Meader), 2 pawpaws and a fig tree (burried) survived that cold. I also have potted 2 jujubes (Li and Lang) and Fuyu and Rosseyanka persimmons. Potted plants were stored in unheated, let`s say small shed located in my garden. They were just protected from the strong wind, but the minimal temperature inside was minus 16 C. All my trees survived with no damages, I am so happy. Rosseyanka was put to the ground. All my persimmons and jujubes now have swollen buds, so it means they are waking up. I live in Poland. Comments (7)This is not a disease but a feature of this variety. Rosseyanka is the only true hybrid with 50:50 ratio of each species. Since the american and asian persimmon are not very cross compatible this first direct hybrid although vigorous shows some genetic instability. It may be simplified but I am not going into meiosis thing as I am not an expert in plant genetics....See MoreCliff England impressive new 2014 scionwoods list
Comments (5)His DL-1-1 cross tastes great!! It has rosseyenka blood in it but larger (rosseyenka is tiny, not sayin DL is large, just large-er maybe 2x size to put in roughly great wall category size) and tastes just awesome. I think I do like rosseyenka flavor in general tho so I may be partial to these rosseyenka hybrids. offtopic but can persimmon get bacterial canker...? i feel like my rosseyenka got somethin canker-esque goin on this year......See Morestrudeldog_gw
