Can red raspberry sucker-sprawl be contained?

I have a fairly small yard and I can't devote much space to red raspberries, but if there's a way that I could keep them in their place then I'd like to grow some. I've heard the idea to sink segments of culvert into the ground and planting in them, but I've never head from anyone who has actually done it. Does it work? I'm thinking of the time I tried to grow mint in a pot, and it very quickly became a solid mass of roots so dense that they couldn't be watered. Any guidance?
