Hewes Crabapples
My hewes crabapple has about 12 very large apples on it. This is the first year it has produced fruit. The size of the fruit exceeds the standard definition of a crabapple. There is some redness showing in the fruit. I don't ever recall seeing crabapples this large. I can not recall ever harvesting an edible crabapple. I put the tree in to have the fruit to blend with cider when I have enough other apple varieties to make cider.
My question is to those who are growing or have grown Hewes crabapple. Does it sound like I have a Hewes crabapple from the description? Also, is taste the indicator when they are ripe. Here in zone 7 when can I expect them to start getting ripe?
