What will happen is that they will sprout IN THE refrigerator. You'll have more then you'll know what to do with. I had 100's of them when i did it last fall/winter. They don't require too long so be prepared to pot them up while winter is still here. Like little weeds.

If anything i would have waited another month, but then you are a zone + ahead of me, so you can go outside that much earlier. Start checking them around the new year.

first of all, if your intent is to grow beautiful Macintosh apples, this is not a good way to do it. Seedlings are alot like our children. They never look identical to the parent and sometimes look nothing like them. It's difficult to say how the fruit would turn out. There's a good chance the fruit would be small and inferior and maybe not resemble a typical Macintosh. Buy a grafted tree if you want guaranteed results.

If you are determined to grow a tree from seed, your method should work. Just a couple pointers...make sure the peat is slightly moist. You might want to add a fungicide. Put it in the fridge (just above freezing) in the fall and check in early spring. When you see little white sprouts, you can put them in one of those tiny greenhouses for seedlings from Lowes or Home Depot. Leave it in a windowsill until temps moderate. Acclimate them slowly to sun and wind (a couple hours a day-gradually increasing). Then plant outside after last frost. Good luck. I've done this succesfully with maple seeds and I don't think apple seeds are too far off.

It's not unheard of to use seedling for apple rootstock.

If you want to do it as a fun project, koko, then more power to you. As for myself, grafting is a long project, so I'd rather use named and certified rootstock so I'd know the qualities and be able to look up any compatibility issues between my scion and the rootstock.

You will get standard size trees, if the Mac rootstock will grow in your climate zone.

Again this is just my opinion, but I think that if a person had lots of room and lots of time, it would be fun to grow out some seedlings and hope one or two of them would have a delicious new variety of apple.

After all, Mac has been used successfully in a lot of breeding programs and it's the parent a several good varieties.

I've got a bunch of freebie pear seedlings going where I dumped out the unused pears in late 2008. They've gotten to be pretty good sized this year, and most of them are about 4-5 feet tall now.

I'm going to plant a couple of them out and see what happens. I realize it might be 20 years before they fruit.

The rest -- next spring, "off with their heads" -- I'm going to use them as rootstock, mainly just to practice my grafting. I actually got a couple of my trial grafts to grow this past year, and have baby apple trees now. Dumb me, I didn't label them (that infamous "I'll remember, I'll remember thing I always tell mysel), but they're something good, as I took the scion wood off of the new trees planted in 2009.

With these pears, I think I'm going to try grafting most of them with Olympic/Korean Giant. Maybe I'll get a couple to take!

Bend the branches to the ground... It'll induce early fruiting...or use them as rootstock. I've got seedlings coming out of my ears and nowhere to put them. I've also got mangoes, avocadoes, and a host of other things growing in the compost bed...

This is for a fun project. I am just wanting the rootstock out of this...I can graft them over to some other flavour.
I just don't know if it is wise to start the sprouting seeds inside in pots...I usually have fail when growing stuff indoors. Someone said on here plant them outside....how is it possible for them to over winter outside just sprouting from seeds?

I have started Golden Delicious seeds in pots outside through the winter and have some germinate the first year and some the second year. My orchard is dry farmed with no summer water in a climate with no rain from May to November. Dwarf root stock will not survive,GD after the first year does very well. I graft what ever apple I want on the GD root stock. Of course my trees are all 20 to 30 foot tall. Al
