Pruning Pear Trees

aloha10

I have three pear trees in my mini orchard. They were purchased as semi dwarf but after four seasons, they are 12-14 feet high. They grew fruit for the first time this year!! Yeah! I have learned everything I know about pruning from reading these pages and I thank you all very much. Jelly man has been particulrly helpful. After studying this advice based on such valuuable experience, I have decided to prune the pears in an open vase shape. These past years, I have trained laterals to the proper angle. My question is, when should I do the pruning. I am away in Feb. and March. I have many two foot suckers growing and I want to take the 14 foor leaders back to about eight feet as advised in this forum. May I do it now? Should I wait until leaf fall? Should I wait until I get back to MA in April? Advice would be appreciated
