Yard sale cactus and cactus show

I went to the Intercity cactus show at the Los Angeles Arboretum on Saturday. There are great photos over on the cactus and succulent forum. A link to some of their photos is below my pics. There are other posts on that forum with more photos.

I found the plants, pots and other goodies at a yard sale on Friday, and got a great deal on them. What a lucky day!! The people having it are very nice and the man who lives there made the wonderful pots. I cleaned up and repotted a lot of the plants today, but have about 25 more to go. The plant photos are before/after. They're in good condition, and just had leaves and stuff on them. It was a painful job, lol, but worth every minute. Some of the cactus will be planted on my slope later. Linda

They look wonderful in the "after" photos! I just LOVE those clay pots and the wrought iron stairs.

Wow!!Wow!! Wow!!! & ouch!! How do you get the "junk" off of those sharp thorns??? Only thing I can think of is hair dryer on cool. They look terrific after you replanted them in the lovely pots that look just made for that plant!! Great looking tiles there, are they going on your bank too? You must have had a blast!! Jan

Thanks for the well wishes! I started out with 16 possible entries a couple of months ago, last night I made the final decision on the top ten. They're all nice but the ones I selected are my favorites and IMHO are the best of the best. There's at least one that will wow the judges. For the average grower it is not a big production, but for me the being so anal about the presentation and the headache of making a pot to match the plant it is fairly involved. Most of the specimens I'm taking have to be prepared months in advance, taking them from growing pots or bed to show containers, root pruning or downright removal. There's one plant I cut in half to fit into the pot and still look balanced. Another was plucked from the ground 5:00 this morning and staged before I went to work. There's only two that I did nothing to, since I want them to grow slow I just leave them in the show pots year round. Then there's transportation. If it was just across town it would be a piece of cake, but a 6hr drive takes some preparation. Each plant has to be anchored to the pot so it doesn't vibrate out and topple over. Then the smaller plants need to boxed in such a way so they don't dump from going around a corner. On one plant the stems are so fragile that I put netting around so they don't snap from the bumpy ride. Another plant that didn't make the cut

WOW... it is beautiful. Can't do that here as we have heavy daily rains during the summer. I have a few succulents growing out in the yard but hard to keep from getting too much water.

Ahh man, I wish this was next weekend, I'll be in Norman then - I'm not up for a 5 hour round trip drive tomorrow though :( Please post pictures in the C&S section when it's all said and done. Also, I'm going to cry if you tell me they are selling Hummel Sunsets :P Britt

I used large tweezers to move the stuff and a small shop vac to pull it out. After removing most of it, I gave them a fast blast of water, then set them in the sun to dry quickly. The tiles are those little z-bricks. If there are enough, they'll cover the floor in my potting shed. Lots of busy work ahead. Linda

Wonderful group you found! And the rest of your haul...oh, my... BTW, an easy way to plant or transplant them is with newspaper - fold several layers lengthwise and wrap around the cactus to make a sort of sideways sling with a handle....dig the hole, set the cactus in it, firm the soil, then remove the newspaper wrap. Prevents many an hour spent removing spines from the fingers!

Linda I read about that show on the internet. I would SO love to be able to go to one of them. (Of course there are 'several' things in CA I'd love to be able to go to...) Isn't there a big one in San Diego, too?

I like cacti and succulents. What fun pairing them up with an appropriate pot and getting them all cleaned up. I love to spend time doing that.

That first picture is certainly the perfect pair! They bring out the best in each other! Great pictures. Thanks.

Oh my Linda...did you have an inside clue on that sale or what...must have been there when he put them out. LOL. Great haul. Speaking of haul...what is the green metal piece with wheels before the staircase? Very interesting.

OH, sewandsew, I'm so happy you and the "nice man" found each other! What an awesome YS! You did hit the Jackpot of the Summer!!! Wow, and I moan & groan about my little ol' Iowa "Pricky Pear" cactus when I try to weed around them! WOWsers!!! These are beauties!

And, like Cait, I'm still droolin' over all those pots! I just ckd. at Hobby Lobby today to see if any good clearance pots...already gone from shelves around here! We're doing a flea market this weekend so I'm hoping to some great finds like your pots...but yours are ORIGINALS!!! Nothing beats that! You should be on a "high" with sore fingers for quite awhile! Thanks for the nice comments and the newspaper idea, and I did have to pick out several pokies.

June, this sale was on Craigslist and I was going in that direction on Friday. I didn't see any plants or pots in the ad or at the sale, so asked if they had any. They had a treasure trove of them, and the cactus. The green thing is a fireplace grate, I think, but will be a red succulent planter soon. Funny to see wheels on a grate. It never hurts to ask about what you're looking for at a sale. These plants and pots are far better than anything in my yard.

Donna, there are cactus, succulent, and various plant shows and sales all over California. Most of us are never bothered by that white stuff here, so shows and sales are year round. Did you see the show photos on the Cactus and Succulent forum? There are some people over there who take great pictures. Linda
