I got a pair of cowboy boots this last weekend also, so would like to know the same, how to plant them.

I have seen a lot of boots planted on here. I have a few myself. I didn't line it first I just put in potting soil and planted the plant and thats it. It did require watering everyday. Some people plant hens and chicks and those are really pretty too!!!Heres mine with a tomato totem.

I don't have boots planted (yet!) but I do have a little shoe garden. The idea for the sign I got from someone on this forum. I just need to move my resin boot birdhouse to this area and wait for dh to retire his boots :) I just planted directly in them and water daily :)

I don't have any planted up but i know you may want to consider drilling a drain hole in the bottom. I have a pair of mud boots that I do up with silk flowers in the fall for my fall display. Teh rest of the time they sit by my potted plants up by my front porch.
Remember, we want to see a photo when you are done.
Oh, suggestion of plants....creeping jenny or some of the other succulant plants that trail.

Cindee, your planted red boots and tomato totem is just the neatest arrangement I've ever seen. What an adorable way to display the boots. What a neat picture for a card, note cards, or just in a frame, not to mention how great it looks in your garden!

Did you treat the boots with some time of weather proof substance?

I didn't treat the boots just stuck them out there. They were taken in last winter though because I was trying to save the silver falls dicondra from freezing. I really loved that look with the silver/red. I also have a shoe garden..I will post link below. The rest of the shoes I leave out all year.

I've posted mine before, but here it is again. I definitely suggest hen & chicks or sedum that can really take being dry. Otherwise you are a slave to them and if you miss a day or two of watering, they're done for. I didn't line mine - just planted directly in them, no drain holes, but did cut a hole in the toe and planted it also. I leave mine out all winter. I never water mine - they only get the occasional rain and once in awhile the hose hits them if I happen to be watering something else near them, which hardly ever happens. I've never done cowboy boots - only work boots, but I'm thinking it would be neat to fill them with dirt and cut holes up and down the sides to plant sort of like a strawberry pot.

here's my daddy's boots that I planted in. Just put a lil pea gravel in the bottom, stuck the plants in and filled with potting soil. I water mine everyday.

I did a pair of child sized cowboy boots with hen and chicks in, and they did really well. They came back this spring just fine from last year. I was SO happy with them!
Now my neighbors yellow lab puppy has run off with my boots and ripped the plants out of them. ;( rassenfrassen...

Nanatink, I feel your pain! We have a part yellow lab (3 years old this week) that eats (and I mean eats) everything! (DVD's, super glue, silicone, carrots and strawberries out of my garden, etc. etc.) He's lucky he's cute is all I can say :)
