please help me id an old lawnmower...

calling the experts: Growing up in the 70's my dad had a walk behind lawn mower. I would like to find one and buy it. I remember the red decking, white painted engine and the fact that you had to wrap a piece of rope around the top of the engine to get it started. Can you offer any ideas what manufacturers offered a model like that? deck was steel and heavy gauge. Any other websites where i can see pictures or find more info? I will recognize it for sure if i see it. it also had a variable speed lever if i remember correctly. Dad may have bought it used as i think the rope starter indicates something older than what was made in the 70's or even the 60's right?

Sounds like a Toro Whirlwind with the crank up rewind removed. Those had cast decks though.

Would it have been an old Snapper? They have white engines and heavy red decks of metal. Just don't know how long they have been that way though.

Hi Bryon, I just had to jump in. I have one of those plants. I read that it was in your family office and wasn't taken very good care of. I bought two different plants from Home Depot, they each had three plants in the pot. I combined them into one pot. I have had the plant for 2 years and was doing very well. Then in the past 6-7 months I notice it is dropping the lower leaves and sometimes the entire branch comes off right at the stalk. I don't know what might be causing this, I haven't moved it changed any of the habits, now it stands w/ 5 leaves on the very top and the lowest ones are getting ready to drop. I was wondering if you could lend some help, I have had these plants before and they were always carefree and good growers for me. Thanks for the help if you can.

Your rose looks similar to a rose in the Sacramento Cemetery, our found rose, "Dr Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" is thornless, once blooming. Very fragrant. This found rose is thought to be the same as the Charles Lawson in commerce. Below is a link to a photo I took in the cemetery a few years ago. I liked this rose so much that I propagated it and planted it in my yard even though it is a once bloomer. It is quite vigorous and now takes up the back corner along the fence. I'm in Southern Wayne Co. It's a tall county! I do love it--it's all beautiful. Sadly, my gardening days are winding down, so I'm not seeking new plants. Between an invasion of Germander Speedwell, advancing age (mine) and a chronic condition leftover from one of my (many) tick bites, the weeds have been winning and I don't have the energy for the battle anymore. I gave away quite a few plants last year, and if/when I do it again, I'll be glad to let you know. Do you ever come to Honesdale? It's so centrally located. ;-)

Like other posters said, it looks good--just in its summer colors. It's going to be perfectly happy in the ground unless drainage is poor or you get heavy frost. You can hedge your bets by potting up a piece of it, and leaving the rest in the ground.

Indy452 - Snapper got the patents for their trademark steel deck & variable disk\belts propulsion in the 60's.

Douglas, my parents had a Kmart push that i recall was red with white briggs motor in the 80's. I had a 60's red sears riding red w\white 7hp Tecumseh motor. Point being, flip through the pics, Toro and Snapper are not your only possibilities.

Yeah, while i have been reading the dates of the posts, i only noticed this one after i submitted. houzz is recycling posts because when i quit i noticed alot of post that are years old. DOH!!
