New Chicken Coop Decor!

I found these great hand crafted wooden wall hangings at my Salvation Army yesterday. I mounted them on the front of my chicken coop tonight. What'cha think?

Groovy! Nice find. But the Chicken Coop is superb! We would like to have a few chickens and I just love the idea of a decorated one. I would love to see more pics of it!!!

My sister has a great system for her chickens and garden. Her coop is built right next to a "double" garden plot. The plot is divided in half and completely fenced. Each summer, one half is available for the chickens to roam and scratch, while the other is her vegetable garden. Each fall, after harvest is done, she switches sides. She roams the streets with her trailer and collects hundreds of bags of raked leaves, dumps them in with the chickens, and they spend the next year enjoying the bugs and worms the leaves attract. The chicken poop and leaves turn into wonderful compost and nary a weed survives their pecking. She is lucky enough to be in the country, so she can get away with this plan. She has had repeated challenges with predators, and spent more money on reinforcing vents and fences than I'm sure her chickens are worth. However, she's not trying to make it a money saving or making venture. Chickens can be wonderful, but they do require constant vigilance. Martha

Well, I don't know if this is correct or not, but I think that a red light is better for chickens?? Maybe someone else knows for sure. I have a red heat lamp suspended about 3 to 4 feet above the floor of the coop. I leave it on 24-7 if it is really cold. My chickens do not seem to get stressed by this and continue laying. There is always the fire safety issue, so I have it properly secured and have a cover over it. I have never tried the ceramic heaters, but they may be safer.?? I would recommend a metal fountain that fits onto a heater designed just for the purpose, to keep the water from freezing. Water is very important for them to produce eggs. If you don't do this you will have wet conditions in your coop and drive yourself crazy trying to keep them with water this winter. But, the reason that I checked your thread again, was to let you know that proper ventilation is also very important. Even though it's cold they need to keep excess moisture out of the coop. This goes for any farm animal. Better cold than on the warm side. I use only wood shavings on the floor and straw in nests. It's easer to clean out when you don't mix the two together. Those "big pieces of feces" is actually chicken poop,(humor) just throw more chips over it and put it in the compost next spring. Don't worry. You will do just fine with your chickens. Enjoy them. If the screws were all backed out, like you think, there's only one type animal that could have done that (except maybe a really clever monkey-which aren't common in these parts). If an animal caused this damage, I'd expect claw marks, twisted or broken hinges, and lots of splintered wood. Animals can have lots more strength than many would think, they can eat through things that we wouldn't think possible, and they can be very clever...but the damage they cause usually doesn't look as neat and clean as what I can see in your chicken coop pics. If it looks too good to be wild animal damage, it's probably not.

Trust Me. These chickens are spoiled ROTTEN!!! I do have to "spank" them occasionally, when I catch 'em eating my flowers ~ they LOVE Black Eyed Susans...

Oh how perfect those plaques are. What a great find!
I had previously thought that chicken coup was the BEST EVER. But it just keeps getting better and better.
Kinda makes me want to be a chicken. LOL.

Those are perfect! I love them. I love your chicken coop too. It is so cute. I wish mine were that awesome.
This summer we hooked up a water cooler for the girls and they are doing so much better. Egg production has not dropped off at all. We got a closeout deal last fall on it and I am so glad we did. The girls sit in front of it and relax in the afternoon. Its a riot!!!!!! It has been hot here and usually is in the summer. Thats when the girls molt and stop laying. So far this summer they are not!
