Makes us stronger! Goodness, I must be super strong now! I decided to take on a major overhaul of my patio, since I spend so much time outside. I wanted it to be more homey, so I painted the ugly concrete with faux brick and a rug. Here are the results...

I agree with others here who have suggested mosquito dunks. There are also smaller pellets that you can sprinkle in the water called mosquito bits that contain the same active ingredient, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) bacteria. This bacteria is lethal to mosquito larvae, but is harmless to humans and animals. If you use mosquito bits, simply sprinkle some on the surface of the water until the surface is covered. Getting a water pump for your bird bath is another way to discourage mosquitoes from breeding in the water. The added bonus with that solution is that you'll attract even more birds, because birds love the sight and sound of moving water. Best of luck!

The first year we had a garden here, overnight the wind ripped off practically every leaf on most of our plants. Set them back ~3 weeks. This year I was gone when we got hail and peppers still recovering. Soon the CPB and flea beetles will arrive. Welcome to the High Plains! Very challenging gardening here. If you're not cutting the bottoms out of the buckets they'll be more unhappy than left alone. I also save garden trimmings for stakes, and Target has this coated garden wire in the dollar bins, one packet does about 7-9 plants - I do this for peppers in the early wind, then they get the cattle panel to weave into. I left the WOWs on for longer, and still have one on for wind protection and heat. I still have one hoop up for windbreak for the onions - 1/2" black poly the ends secured by...hmmm...not sure...sunflower stalks? Tree prunings? Tomatillo in pot is wind-protected by old remay. Anyway, you'll figger it out. Very challenging place to learn, certainly. You'll be a wind and hail expert here soon, answering the newbie questions about what works for you. I agree that mistake #1 is letting a kid decide to go live elsewhere 'BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE RULES'... I mean duh! what kid likes the rules and wouldn't want to go live where they think they can get away with more? When you abdicate your parental authority to the grandparents and they are not savvy enough to watch her.. or they are older & don't have the energy to keep up with what she's doing or whatever the reason... I don't get why people think that it's okay to send their kids off to grandparents to raise, especially when they cannot control them themselves. And the he wants to be able to exert some control from his recliner? (Sorry, I just get a mental picture of a guy, relaxing in his easy chair... yelling at kids to stop jumping on the bed.. but he's too lazy to go into the next room and see what they are doing or make them stop. and then gets really mad at them for not listening when someone falls off and gets hurt!) The only advice I can give is to tell your DH to get off his easy chair and go get his daughter and BE A PARENT to her. It ain't easy and he may not get the results he wants, but if he's going to send her to live with anyone else, he has no right whatsoever to complain about what happens...

toilet doesn't empty but doesn't overflow; jackhammer noise

So I called the plumber, a few weeks later since I was traveling and of course the toilet worked fine. No noise and it didn't seem to be stopped up. The plumber said I hadn't turned the water fully back on and he thought that was causing the jackhammer noise. But the plumber thought the flush valve and the other inside parts needed to be replaced so he did that. As soon as he left (of course) the toilet started doing something else. It bubbles up when it flushes - like the water is being pushed back into the toilet and then it flushes. But the handle sticks now and it makes the toilet run. I can live with the bubbling thing but is there an easy way to adjust the handle or does it need to be replaced too?

Awesome job on the patio! How did you do the "bricks"? I have a huge (11' x 30') open porch that I've been thinking about painting the floor of...It's plain old ugly concrete, and I'm tired of looking at it as is...thought bricks would be cool, but yours is the first one I've seen completed. I really like it! How long did the project take to finish??

Thanks for the compliments! Misselaineous, it took me a week to finish, working everyday, all day!!! I used a really large sponge as the base, but handpainted each brick individually. It is a tedious job, but well worth it! I think someone makes brick stencils too. You might want to check a craft store.

I'm astounded. I can't even begin to understand the meticulous work of painting the bricks and getting the rug so perfectly symmetrical. Kudos to you!

WOW is right - it's fantastic! I was just about to ask how you got the mottled colors for the bricks. I've been thinking of doing my basement floor to look like stone, but prefer it to look real, with the mixture of colors, and haven't figured out how to do it. But I see you handpainted them - that puts it out of my ballpark! I'm not a painter. Is the bottom picture a before picture? Again, it is amazing. You should be very proud of your work!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My parents said I need to do this for a living, but I don't think anyone could afford me after this hard work! Luvs2click, no that picture is just of my driveway in the back, but that's pretty much what the carport looked like before......DULL!!!

Some one should call HGTV or Better Homes and Gardens. They could do a whole piece on your home and gardens. What a fantastic job, you should be very proud. I'd love mine to look like bluestone. Humm something to think about. Going to call talented SIL. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Very, very impressive, tootiet. What type of sealer did you use ? Do you have felt pads under the chair legs or is that neccessary ? I'd hate to see it scratched. It's just so beautiful. Very artistic.

Chris2U.....I used a concrete sealer to keep it waterproofed. Most of the paint I used is concrete paint and it self-seals. Although, about 7 years ago, I painted my front porch with acrylic craft paints and it's still just as good as it was. Yes, everything has felt pads underneath....even my plant stands! Too much hard work to have it all scratched up!!

Holy Moly! Your patio is beautiful! I had to scroll back and read again, because it didn't register at first that you painted the bricks as well as the rug. What an awesome job!!I would love to spend a day at your house just sitting on that patio!

I really enjoyed the pictures.I keep threatening to rip up my ugly Berber and paint the concrete floor.
