stuff I brought back from Connecticut

While I have picked up a good bit of roadside junk here in Texas such as beverage cans, copper wire & misc. hardware, finding the kind of used household stuff that we junkers are looking for, made of glass & metal, has been impossible. In 5 years, all I've found locally is plastic stuff. Here is what I brought back after a 2 week visit to Connecticut. The veggie steamer, 2 metal fan blades, & 3 tart pans will be turned into flowers. I forget what I needed the 2 wire whisks for, but they will be turned into something. The little watering can has Texas Blue Bonnets painted on it so I had to grab that. The toadstool salt & pepper set need only a gnome to be complete. The pieces of glass will be combined with some pieces I already have to make various things. I'll post pictures when I get things put together. - Laura

What is it about Texans that they won't throw an old cheese grater out the window? I can never find anything other than a single shoe and hammers. I did see a really great shabby old step ladder once on the side of the freeway but didn't have time to stop.

Also, has the elevation changed substantially in recent memory? Might soil or high levels of debris or leaves been piled or washed around it, raising the soil level greatly, essentially burying the plant? If any plant is buried too deeply, it can suffocate it. You might need to gently reduce the soil level around the plant to permit sufficient air, water and sunlight into it to stimulate it to grow. Might you be able to find photographs or take photos of the insect you say eats it? If either insects, rabbits, squirrels, gophers or other vermin are eating the plant, essentially keeping it severely pruned, it may not grow and flower. Something is definitely wrong when a plant which has flowered for approximately a century, stops blooming for twenty years. Any and all photographs can help diagnose the issues, so take lots from various angles, showing the area, overhead canopies of any nearby trees, anything you think might affect the plant's performance. You may post them to Photobucket and link them here or any other photosharing site. Some even permit you to copy and paste the address to this form so they open right in your post. Seil is right. Knowing where you are, where the plant grows, can assist greatly in suggesting what you might be able to do to encourage it to grow and bloom. What's appropriate for Idaho right now, is probably very different from what I would suggest to someone living here outside of Los Angeles, where I am. It makes an enormous difference. Kim

Given that they came from Hawaii, my first thought would be to keep them indoors until you know they are hardy, and that they are really sedums. Many plants closely resemble Sedums but are not cold hardy at all. They will probably root and grow easily indoors, just don't overwater them. You could use a gro-light and leave it on 12-16 hours... or just put them in a sunny window. Then you can figure out what they are and decide what to do with them accordingly, or, if you can't figure out what they are, take a chance with them outdoors - but wait until spring to plant them so they have a shot at getting established before fall.

The islands were great, everything was lush and green, though I found out that only the East and South sides get natural rainfall adequate to keep them green. The West and southwest, where all the resorts are, usually get very little precipitation. Naturally, they're like barren dessert! The greens in those areas are there because of human irrigation. Interesting. I just placed the 8 cuttings in pots last night, under grow light. Can't wait to see the results.

"Just wait until you have to pack up all that crap and move it." My SIL just bought a retirement home so they are decluttering their current house as a preparation for selling it--she keeps telling me she can't believe how much STUFF she's got to get rid of. When I go to their house I always admire how it looks nicely organized and without extraneous things all over. However, I also admire her tons of closets and storage space which she says leads to keeping, you guessed it, all that stuff LOL. I've decided I will play a mental game this summer and pretend we have to move; maybe that will be my motivation to get rid of much unnecessary and unused stuff in our house! I use the holidays and shopping for gifts to satisfy any yen I may have to be a retail hunter/gatherer. The past few years I increasingly feel as if I am gorging myself after staying on a careful and healthy diet; by the time January comes I feel so psychically bloated from all the shopping /buying that I need another year to rest up and recover! It's interesting to me to watch my young adult daughter who is setting up her first home. She loveslovesloves Home Goods, Marshalls, Pier 1 etc. And when I go with her I usually find stuff I could easily buy. I have a rule that I can't take anything from those places home the day I see it. That usually short circuits the purchase, I'm rarely motivated enough to fight the traffic and crowds to go back a second time!

Hee-Hee ! It's not like I Really expect people to toss them out windows onto the road, but couldn't they add their rusty graters to their tag sale ? LOL I have tried tag sales, thrift stores & flea markets. People down here really hang onto to their metal junk. Never have found any decent glass either. However, I picked up a small pile of clay flower pots that was next to a dumpster a couple of weeks ago. I'm grateful for that.

Great finds. In my part of Texas we have lots of garage sales, but mostly new stuff is put out. We have a second hand store that offers lots of goodies if you can beat the other junkers there!!!! Will be fun to see what you make from your finds.

I can find some glass here but recently prices have really
gone up.
I never see tart pans of any size--I would love to do some flowers!

Now you have to show us what you made. Or is that in another thread? I have toadstool salt and peppers. Didn't think of combining them with a gnome, tho I am thinking of changing the colors.

I haven't been able to put anything together yet. First of all, the landlord is going to replace the wooden fence that surrounds our patio, so I have to take down all my "flowering vines" as well as all of the things that are nailed to or screwed to the fence. I also have to move all the potted plants, etc. Right now I'm laid up with an exceptionally bad case of sciatica. As soon as we get ourselves together, I'll post pictures. - Laura

I can relate to the sciatica and have found a solution that has worked wonders for me. It is basically accupressure and hurts like the dickens but is worth the pain for relieving the sciatica sooner. Mash around on your back, hip, butt area until you find the most sore spot, then take a tennis ball and center it on the sore spot and roll on it-laying on floor or sitting in chair depending on location. It will hurt but as the muscle relaxes it gets better. Then ice area. Do this 3 times a day and it will be well before you know it. If you sit a lot you can roll up a towel and put it under your legs near the front of the chair. This gently stretches out the muscles. Hope you are well soon.
