My first time posting pictures! Here's some of my favorite garden junk... All flowers I've grown from seed too. I'm so proud. I hope you can view the pictures.

The sap buckets I purchased from Ebay several years ago. The plow, I won at an auction for $1.00. All the galvanized tubs were mostly given to me. The old iron grocery cart I won at an auction for $5.00.

The petunias are so pretty and so healthy. Mine have turned to mush in the heat and humidity.

What is the vine on the fence over the tubs?

Hi, everyone! great news is that the Rosarian couple were very nice. I actually tried calling them last night but couldn't get through because they had their fax machine on. Then tonight they explained that they couldn't return my call because the number I had left them had been cut off by their answering machine. They too have not grown tree roses because like Karl had feared, rose trees do terrible in Kansas. Stupid me should also have thought far ahead about our tornado problems as well. I didn't think about this issue before the terrible winds this past weekend. Flower2sew, in Overland Park we got hit real bad. There is still debris from knocked over light poles on Hwy 69 from people crashing from the ice... But the snow lasted just one terrible day, it was very thick snow,and we were blasted with both ice and snow at once and in some parts of Overland Park, the cable lines and phone lines were down ...then argh, it shot up to near 60 degree warmth right the following day, then dropped down again the following evening. The rosarian couple agreed that they would never leave out the tree roses at this point because of last weekend's extreme swing of temperature (including this week) but they too felt I really needed to speak to a Master Rosarian, so they gave me the emergency helpline for the Rose Society. The nice rosarian couple I spoke to explained that they themselves have never grown tree roses because of how erratic Kansas weather can be in the spring and they said that the people they know who had rose trees all had either greenhouses or would go to a nursery and "rent" out a space for the winter. In other words they wouldn't know how to advise me on how to keep my roses indoors in my particular situation. They did feel that since my rose trees still have buds sprouting, that keeping them in a completely dark, cold, poorly insulated garage at this point is a question that only a master rosarian could answer. It is a tough call because no sane person/gardener would ever be in the crazy predicament that I am in now... I am doing crazy stuff like lightly spraying my roses with warm water in the morning and when I come home, then again before going to bed to keep them as close to a greenhouse effect and reducing my house temperature from 68 degrees to 65 so that I don't shock the roses when I bring them outside to 58 degree sunshine (but that makes me super cold indoors and I end up having to wear a few layers of clothing in the house and shivering under the covers when I try to sleep LOL). So hopefully I can reach the helpline before I get "outta control" and do more crazy outta control guesswork. Anyway, thank you EVERY One and All for your help and ongoing support! Hugs to each of you... P.S. forgot to say that to me the membership dues for the American Rose Society is very reasonable, and wouldnt have hesitated for a second had I not been so broke from all the training with Eluane and house payments but in due time if I can just make the baby steps and get both trees to survive.

when water is coming out the bottom.. that should be a fair indication.. that you are overwatering ... too often ... these types of transplanting are better done in spring .. rather than august ... for a multitude of reasons ... all transplanted stock.. should be protected from full sun to give the roots time to get pumping some water .. say for a week or two.. ... and again.. spring sun is much less intense than august sun ... and you might want to put those pots on something to get them literally off the deck [a trivet??] .. as water can rot things ... so you lift a giant water holding pot.. off the decking a bit ... so that the decking itself.. can dry so.. late transplant.. in the wrong season.. with to much sun.. and too much water .... in a questionable media ... september.. as the sun wanes.. with cooler nights.. might have been a better transplant season .. and finally.. i dont know how good the stock was to start with ... you obviously got stock nearly past full bloom.. no matter what you do.. it was in decline.. as far as this years flowers went.. so the goal is to find out if you can get it to live for next year .. i never had a lot of luck with lavender.. in MI .. they died every spring.. and i THINK it had to do with too much water.. root rots ... perhaps.. lavender.. is not the best thing for pots.. i will defer to others on that ... insert finger to 3 to 4 inches.. and do not water again.. until the soil feels like it is drying .... on some level.. i think you are trying to kill it.. with TOO MUCH LOVE ... ken ps: did you thoroughly moisten all of the media.. PRIOR to planting .... because if you didnt.. you may have intermittent areas of too dry.. and too wet ... Here is a link that might be useful: flip to the IMAGES

How hard is it to grow peppers in Texas, for a 1st time gardener?

I just spent considerable time trying to ascertain the effects of high temps on different peppers, both "hot" and "sweet". That thread is just below and is titled; "How will extreme heat and high humidity effect my peppers?" Most seem to agree that the bells are tough to grow in the hottest part of summer. I just purchased some seed of the "bell type" Keystone Giant. The feed-store guy was confident they would perform in the heat. It's only seeds-n-time! And water, fertilizer, compost,.. did I mention time? We're not supposed to discuss a whole lot about "Other Vegetables" here in pepper land. So here's the short version; These should do well for you; Cucumbers, melons, okra, peas, amaranth, collards, eggplant (the long, skinny oriental types are more productive in heat). Others include Jerusalem artichokes, Malabar spinach, New Zealand spinach, peanuts, hot peppers, and sweet peppers like Banana, Gypsy and Cubanelle should perform better than the bell types. Sweet potatoes enjoy the heat along with Swiss chard (with some shade), tomatillo and tomato. There are now many specific heat-tolerant tomatoes such as Heatwave, Solar Set and Sunleaper.... The Yardlong bean (asparagus bean) flourishes in the heat of summer and is as unusual as it is delicious. Of course, you should check with your local Cooperative Extention Service for more info. I understand this. Certain crops do well with direct sowing but I've had contrary to the norm experiences to date. Carrots and onions and beets---eh, not as great as I hoped despite over seeding. Radishes all sprouted though using same method. Same with zuch, watermelon and winter squash---the seedlings I have had to pull that I hate because they weren't cheap and frankly, I'd love lots of all three---and both marigolds and nasturtiums too. My comment context is on several fronts. I did all transplants last year from mail order and a nursery. It was not cost effective but only one seedling of 15-20 didn't make it. This year was all direct sowing in contrast minus the yarrow left from last year. So yes, seed is cheap overall but I have empty space where I over seeded and not enough space where I counted each individual seed---100% germination with those seeds to be exact so I moved what I could to empty pots with crap soil to see how they do. It was a simple observation that others might find useful/intriguing because there is no right or wrong way to garden and why not share? But thanks for the information.

You have an awesome collection of JUNQUE! Love the tubs and planting containers...your flowers are beautiful too! The hanging lamp and all of your old farm implements are very cool too....love them all!

Thanks for your compliments. The hanging lamp is actually an old railroad lamp given to me by a dear friend. We keep it lite all the time and provides a lovely glow at night. The vine peeking thru the fence above the tubs is an Autumn Clematis. It was given to me by a friend just a couple years ago. It is huge. This is what it looks like from the other side of the fence.

Your flowers from seed are spectacular, I never have enough patience to wait for seeds to start. I like the lantern also. Your collection of kitties is sweet, I like the ones on the porch best. Good job of posting your pix.

WOW...from seed!!! Drop-dead gorgeous flowers! Love the pink & blue combo in those galvanized pots! And your rustic tubs...love 'em...that iron grocery cart is a great recycle for your potted plants!

Great idea on how you added that stiff kind of wire to your wood ladder for your Clematis to grow up on! And that Autumn Clematis is beautiful...I really enjoy my one & planted another this yr because of the later blooming! (and they smell so-o-o good!) Your's is so very healthy!

WOW...gorgeous! Everything...love it all. I'd sure love to grow flowers but they hate me! I swear they kill themselves before giving me a chance to do it. :o(

What wonderful junk! I love all the galvanized steel, the rusty stool with the enamelware bowl on it, the plow, the lantern, the kitties, the cart ... gosh what did I miss? The flowers and plants are spectacular! Thanks so much for sharing your slice of paradise with us!

Thanks for your comments! You have all given me my inspirations. And, above is only a small part of my Garden Art! This is only the second year I've ever started flowers/vegs. from seed. My DH built me a little potting shed two years ago and its just the best to start plants in Feb./March and a nice attic to store all my treasures. I don't think its as economical starting seed versus buying them but watching them grow is just amazing! I can't wait till I can either retire or quit and devote more time to my love of junking & gardening. Nonacook-I'm in Clinton County! We are very close & I've visited the Covered Bridge Festivals many, many times. You live in a beautiful part of Indiana.

Beautiful, you have done an amazing job putting this all together. Love your clematis on the ladder. What name is it? I have some clematis seeds for some of mine that I have been saving and would be glad to share with you and anyone else that wants them. I also have just collected a lot of seed from one of my iris, it blooms yellow and is quite tall either jap or siberian or louisiana iris. You can see pics of the clematis and iris in my flickr album.

Good luck with the sweet autumn clematis, I hate it. It has taken over my yard and is very invasive. I pull it or cut it where ever I see it. If it has not bloomed yet, cut it back so it doesn't spill over into your back yard and try to deadhead it before the seeds spread. It only has a short bloom period in the fall and the blooms are hardly worth the effort when they leave you presents to contend with in all your other beds the following spring.

Again, thanks for the additional comments. Flagtruck, all your pics are just amazing. Love your clematis. I have tried to grow clematis from my own seed but no luck. Have you had success doing this? And, from the iris? I have several other clematis but have only kept the names the last couple years. However, the one on ladder is called Little Duckling. Its flowers are only 2-3". It was lovely a few weeks ago and is only the third year for it too. I see you also do ceramics and your work shed is just adorable. You are very organized. LOVE the idea on your edgers. I have never seen that before & what a great idea. I've wanted to start ceramics too but will have to wait till I don't work anymore. I have lots of ideas though from all the people here who have posted. You are all such a creative bunch. Thanks so much for your continued inspirations.

Soinspired, I don't LIVE in Parke County (live in the Florida panhandle)but have a cabin in Mansfield on the main road to the Bridge and Mill. I tried to send you an email, but there was not one available on your Page. This year will by my 24th year. And yes, I have a bathroom (with no lines!) LOL! I will be there in September and stay until after the festival. I sell cream puffs and eclairs, muffins and brownies.

You and I have the same taste! I LOVE your gardens. Very pretty plantings and I'm so impressed they're all from seed! I'm also impressed by the cost of your 'junk.' Way to find those bargains!!! Just a very very pretty place and one in which anyone would be blessed to spend time in.

Thanks for your continued comments. Calamity, the metal hummer was a gift from a friend years ago. Real hummers will even perch on it! And, Lisa, I've been to Danville many times too on my way to Covered Bridge Festival. Festivals will be starting soon all over Indiana. Can't wait! I had two friends over on Sunday, both are Master Gardeners, and they loved my Garden Junk! I think I inspired them on a few pieces of my "farm implement art." I've directed to this forum to get continued inspirations. I love galvanized items the best too, as they hardly ever rust and are perfect for planting. Please keep posting all your inspirations. I may not comment, as I'm here at work, but I visit on my breaks at least twice a day.
