tea cup planter

Hello Everyone!

My 'normal' way of posting pics here got messed up when our computer went down and I haven't been able to get it to work, so I'm trying a different route. Hopefully this will work! These are just some old teacups from my mosaic stash that I put in an old wooden box to display. Moss Roses are my #1 favorite flower for planting in small containers, since they tolerate drying out so well, and are so pretty when they bloom. Enjoy!

Tami Sue, Mini and semi minature african violets need smaller pots than a tea cup. African violets should be in a pot 1/3 the size of plant. I have set them planted in small pots in tea cups by either filling bottom of tea cup with gravel for drainage, making sure water in gravel is below bottom of pot. Another way I have done it is by cutting the bottom of a solo cup off ( about 1 to 1 1/2 inch) and turning this piece of solo cup over to raise my small cup to height of top of tea cup. I plant semi minatures in solo cups and mini's in empty Keurig cups (from my coffee maker).With the plant sitting on the turned over solo bottom, I am also able to hang a wick into water at a level below bottom of pot into water in bottom tea cup to wick water. those tea pots made from take out boxes are so cute! When I think of making 200 of something tho, I think pastel muffin tin liner or even a small paper cup with a teacup shape like abelladebella's made out of pretty paper glued to it. Do you have a friend with a cutting machine? or is there a die cut tea cup or tea pot out there? If you live near a scrapbook store they may have a die cut and be willing to cut a bunch out of pretty paper and sell them to you. (Or let you do it for a price). Hi Jeff, I don't know Celadon pottery, but I do know crackled glass a bit, so sort of know what you mean. True Raku (rather than my Raku-style mention) as I saw it made abt 40 yrs. ago is fired not in a kiln, but in a firepit in the ground & covered w/ straw. Something in the interaction of the heat, glazes & straw (& maybe its salt content as well?) I believe is what makes that crackle, & its particular, yet variable look rather than the very consistent look of this pot. (Seen at Art School, Hinckley Maine, age 17, hanging out in the open glass house watching the potters & glassblowers while on smoke break.)

That is a very pretty way to display your favorite flower. You really think out of the box or should I say inside the box in this case.

Nope, Cindee, no drainage holes. I just put a few pebbles in the bottom of each cup and water sparingly. If there is a heavy rain and they do get a good soaking, they are small enough to dry out quickly with no harm done. You just can't let them stay bone dry too long.

That's a wonderful idea. In the new Create & Decorate mag they are advertising in the Editor's letter to submit photos of trash to treasure stuff and I think this would make an excellent submission - go for it!

That's a sweet idea! I love that green cup,what a pretty color. The cups are just right for Moss Rose, the shelf makes a great display for them.

Love your idea. This is strange,the other day I saw bunches of clusters of 'something' in our yard. We've had lots of rain lately. Anyway, after seeing your teacups, I went out and inspected the yard. Well, those little cluster turned out to be the moss roses! How neat is that?

Thanks for sharing and helping me discover a pretty little treasure..right in my own backyard!

Cute, cute, cute! Esp against that wonderful 'tasy' blue!! "somewhere" in the garage I've got a small drawer I think I'll try to do something similar.

That is just the neatest idea! I agree about the moss roses.No need to water ALL the time, and they reseed themselves in the weirdest places! Love the cups, love it all!!
