Replacing a dead Cherry tree for a Plum tree??

I have two apple and two cheery trees in my garden all 4 years old...One of my cheery trees has died this year and I am not sure whether it was because of disease or the bad winter we had. It flowered ok and fruited but lots of the fruit shrivelled up and then all the leaves died. I want to replace it with a Victoria plum tree and just wondered if it was disease that killed it can it affect the new plum tree and if so is there anyway to treat the ground before planting?

Hi stevos,
It sounds to me as if the winter caused the damage.
Was there any oozing along the stem?
If you are planting the victoria plum in exactly the same position you could dig some oragnic matter or compost into the soil to improve it and give the plum the best chance.

Stevos - I'd try to id what happened to the cherry before planting a Victoria. One possibility is honey fungus. Others are bacterial canker or silver leaf disease. Check out the symptoms on the RHS website and see what you think. I don't think the winter would be the problem if it flowered and leafed out ok. There may be something going on at root level such as dryness, encircling roots or some sort of contamination. I have seen a cherry die suddenly where a gas pipe leaked.

Sorry, your image of the insect really isn't close enough to be certain of the identity. Could be a beetle ; there are many species that feed on and harbor in dead wood. If they are roaches, they're just using the dead tree as protection. There's certainly no speck of organic mulch in Arizona for them to hide under, lol. Cockroaches do not kill trees or any other plant. The critter inside the tree is a borer. Borers of that size are the offspring of......beetles! Some borers are primary pests of living trees, others will be found in dead, decaying wood. There's no way to tell for certain what killed your tree from the images. It's a bit shocking to see a tree surrounded by stone piled up above the root flair, and I can't help but think that to be a contributing factor. Fruit trees, ornamental or fruiting, can be prone to diseases and pests. Ornamental varieties are considered very short lived.

unless you just have a jones to use your saw ... then i would suggest waiting until spring to see if and how it buds out ... full sun plant.. the shape of yours.. sure makes it look like it trying to grow out of too much shade ... which might mean tree root competition ... you cant really compare 2 trees in your yard .. its not safe.. to presume they should act the same ... too many possible variables ... imo ... they are short lived in tree time.. 10 to 20 years max.. is the usual ... ken

I wouldn't worry about it at all if I couldn't figure out what killed the cherry. It's very unlikely there's something in the soil responsible.

Oops that would be true where I'm located- have to know where you are to speak with any confidence.

Victoria plum is certainly not one of my favorites, by the way, but it sure is productive here in southeastern NY.
