I recently purchased the book... 'The Houseplant Expert'

It is by far one of the best houseplant books by far. Thank you for the recommendation ( whoever did a month or so ago)

If you ever get into the more 'unusual' houseplants or just want a different but great houseplant book, try the 'Unexpected Houseplant' (she also writes about a few common houseplants also). It's brand new, just came out a few months ago, and I absoutly love it!! I found mine at Barnes and Noble, and I cant put it down!

I'm still looking for the houseplant expert 2...I think I may have to order it off of amazon...

I've had pothos do the same--shoot out "wild" strain green from a variegated plant. Guess we deserve it for forcing plants to do things they wouldn't normally do. ;o) I don't mind; the "natural" strains are usually hardier. On the other hand, convincing these plants that they'd be better off separated... *snort* BTW, I hope you all are happy--I ran into the Big W this morning before work to pick up some fuschias my mother's store didn't have, and guess what was new on the $5 houseplant rack? Hoyas! *bwa-ha-ha-ha* Of course I bought one. I killed most of my mother's houseplants this winter. :o( (I forgot that although geraniums love a sunroom in winter, tropical houseplants absolutely do not.) I owe her, if I can part with any of my purchases... *phhbbbbttt* I'm not going to play with you all any more! *lol* At this rate you'll have me cleaning my house, and setting up a schedule (*gasp*) so I can care for all of the new houseplants I'll undoubtably end up purchasing. I was independently wealthy the years when watering my houseplants took 10 gallons of water a week!!! Thanks for all of the great responses! ~ Wren

Just a note to check second hand stores for the books or even AMAZON. I recently bought the Houseplant Encyclopedia for 8 cents and $4 shipping. Book was in brand new condition. The House Plant Expert is hard to find. I have found the House Plant Expert 2 on Amazon but not the first one. Let me know if you come across it, I would like to have that one.

Well, I agree, Calvin. But maybe some kind person could put it in the FAQ? Howard, many, many good points. And it certainly matches my experiences. I started trying to grow tropicals indoors 5 or 6 years ago. Each year it was stall or worse all winter, and took til mid July for them to recover. I finally quit on them after building a light room in my basement that I thought would be plant heaven, with 400W HID, and turned out to be anything but. So on to orchids, mostly catts and oncids, a few phals. More success there, because they are smaller. No joke intended-- you can pick them up and look closely at them, so you find things like scale before they cover half of a 4-ft tall plant! Two years in s/h with great results every summer and terrible outcomes every winter. So I went on to Aussie Gold. That was better. The catts bloomed some, but not enough for the huge investment of time and energy, even physical stress, trying to get them the right shade/sun balance all summer. As it happened, 11/12 mature phals I had last fall bloomed that spring. So gradually over the spring, the Eureka moment arrived: Grow phals! In sum, I have to say that I finally quit trying to manipulate the environment and decided to let it win-- If I want blooms, and I do, I have to grow something that thinks my light room is heaven, and that's phals. The other alternative, as Howard says, is to keep a lot of half-alive desiccating plants around all winter -- too long, too long. Couldn't stand it. And then wait til June for them to get going. No way. I'm taking it easy on myself and them, and growing what's suited to what I can give them. I started with orchids because I wanted flowers all winter, and phals provide that. So I'm content, and truthfully, glad to give up the rat race of trying to provide for ungrateful plants.

Yes, that is the person who wrote it. I cant spell it either at the moment.

FPT. I got the first one off Amazon and they do have the second ne availble there as well. If you get it, an you report back andlet me know if it is worth buying?

If I buy it, I will defiently let you know. But I'm wondering if it's just the exact same plants but just with more updated pics or something like that...if so, then it might not be worth me ordering it special (I'm trying to collect more on unusual and exotic houseplants)...also my local book store just got in a used houseplant expert's handbook, which is exactly the same as the full version but much smaller and with less plants and descriptions...I wanted to get it just for my plant libary, but they wanted $6, too much for a used tiny book for me.

If your trying to build a houseplant libary, a wonderful place are 2nd hand/thrift stores... every time I get paid I go to my 5 local 2nd hand stores in hunt of houseplant books and pots. This last time I found 32 magazines from the Orchid society for 10 cents each at one of the stores, I only own 10 orchids but they still have good information in them, and my daughter loves trying to draw the orchids out of them.
