Table Grapes For Wine

Anyone tried it?

Himrod or Reliance specifically but any table grape wine experience would be good.

What I'm finding from searching Himrod grape wine is that it may have a sweet finish, not that it will necessarily be bad. And that it will be more fruity than what one normally thinks of as grape wine.

I'm not a big fan of normal grape wines but perhaps a sweet wine from white table grapes would be OK. If not at least it would be something to give away if palatable.

I know from how huge my vines got this, their first year, I'm going to have way more grapes than I can eat next year barring weather or disease and have to start planning now. Who knew 40' across the yard would make that much of a difference.

Usually, a table grape will be deficient in acids, and a lower brix. You can get a fair wine from some of them, but the breeder's effort were to have a firm appealing fruit for fresh eating, so you will have thicker skins and more pulp, as a rule. Wine grapes tend to be higher in sugar and acids and stronger flavored.
The main thing is this.
If you like that table grape wine, it is good.

Lower brix = lower alcohol which would be another plus as far as I'm concerned. A problem with my cider ramped up to hit the alcohol tolerance of the yeast is I can't enjoy much of it, I doubt if I can even enjoy much of the 6% cider not beefed up with sugar.

As far as the acid goes that means it would be like any other fruit wine that should be tested and adjusted, whereas wine grapes are designed to come out roughly on target as far as acid and nutrients. That could be another plus since I know I don't like where wine grapes dictate acid should be and I do like fruit wines with no acid adjustments.

I guess I try a gallon or two and make the rest of the over load into jelly and juice. I just know from apple jelly I can't use or give away enough to make much into jelly.

We have a grape vine growing on a trellis (nothing fancy such as a pergola) which was added to the west side of the house long before we bought it. The first year or two we lived here, we just let it go as it would grow--wow--a lot of grape vine covering an area of about 60 sq. feet. It provided great shade, nice over the kitchen window, but it also produced quite a mess! The grapes produced were abundant and the birds had a wonderful time. The vine was way out of hand though, so this year, we pruned it way back. We replaced the old wooden slats that were mostly falling apart from the weight of the vine by using vinyl lattice placed over the 2 x 4's attached to the house. The vine has grown back, produced more grapes, providing nice shade again and also the mess. Ah, well, the birds seem to like those grapes. I don't intend to become a winemaker either. The base trunk of that grape vine is about 8-10 inches around too. For a pergola, I'd go with the clematis. I have an autumn clematis that would work great for such a structure. Bertha

PJ, We are not in the DFW/Burleson area, but since no one else had replied, I thought to give you our experience. We have grown grapes here just south of Waco with success. We have Marquis, Mars, and Reliant, all seedless table grapes. There is a wonderful winery just 10 miles north of us that has had outstanding success with wine grapes. Pierce's disease is probably not going to be a problem for the home vineyard if the vines are planted where no grapes have been grown before, and if the stock you buy is clean. Be sure you get your stock from a trusted nursery (Womacks is near you I believe). Wild grapes are much sturdier than cultivated grape vines so your varietal grapes will need some care. Plant them where you can keep grass away from the stems, watch out for grasshoppers, and give the vines a gentle feeding (about 1/2 strength all-purpose fertilizer like composted manure) about a month after planting and again when they begin to leaf out. Late Feb. or early March is optimum planting time for grapes here. I hope this has been of some help to you. Grapes fresh from the vine are a wonderful treat!
