help me help my aloe plant

My aloe plant has needed a transplant badly for months. I noticed it was basically growing sideways and the root was still in the pot but barely. Also the end of each stem was not full of aloe.So as I was about to fix the problem the whole plant snapped at the stem!!! I panicked and planted it right away in new cactus soil but no root was attached. I planted the root in another pot (it having a small stub of the stem left). I have both pots in direct sunlight and the actual aloe plant is still very green. It has been one week since this has happened and it is just not looking plump and full (as it was looking before this incident)now i wonder will it die? I know it is still growing because the center is receiving a new spike visibly larger this week. Can you help me do something right?
