Looking for seeds from a PetersonXPeterson paw paw

Hello,

I have had some bad luck with grafted paw paws. I lost a Rappahannock and my Susquehanna really went downhill this year. I would like to grow some paw paw trees from seed. I know the fruit quality of seed grown trees is variable, but I figure that if I grow a few that are derived from really good selections, there's a worthwhile chance I'll get something good.

My strong preference is to acquire some seed that has Peterson's varieties as both parents. Can anyone help me out? I'd be happy to pay or trade. Otherwise, I promise to "pay it forward" whenever I have the chance! Have a look at my page to see what I can offer.

Also, in case anyone is concerened, although Peterson's paw paws are protected by patent, the seed is not.

I have lost two as well, along with a scattering of others from other sources and a few seedlings. Various additional ones, though fewer than half, look stressed (yellowish leaves, dieback). I am convinced there is a pooly understood disease afoot. Despite the "nutritional problem" look to it, it doesn't respond well if at all to complete fertilizers (citrus fertilizer by root, or complete soluble fertilizer by leaf). My situation is complicated by plants still being in large pots, but quite a few will be put in the ground (amended with river bottomland silt) or repotted in new soil of a different sort and with silt.

It seems a lot of people have lost grafts, even after a few years of growth, . In my cases and many others, the rootstock seems fine, sending up new shoots. Doesn't this sound like some kind of delayed graft incompatibility? I have heard that Red maples often have this problem, and can't be reliably grafted, even onto seedlings of the tree used for the scion wood.

Again, this is not specific to paw paw, but unless you set them directly in the sun or on a heat source, I doubt a week is long enough to kill them. I'd soak them in a bowl of water for an hour or so to rehydrate them before putting them in cold storage. I would guess that paw paw seeds would have less of a mold issue, so you may be able to get away without the long fiber sphagnum. It is hard to find the live stuff which I like best, but you can get the dried long fiber sphagnum at Home Depot and it works too. The link below shows you which sphagnumto use. The stuff that comes in bales comes from a different place in the bog and is fully dead without the antifungal properties of the long-fiber. Here is a link that might be useful: Long Fiber Sphagnum

Creekweb, Interesting that the seedlings grew over the winter, I would have guessed that they wouldn't do much during short daylength. What has been your experience with Susquehanna seedlings? I grew several this year, along with seeds from other named varieties. Several of the Susquehanna developed vein chlorosis, which is a really unusual pattern for chlorosis, not matching any of the traditional nutrient deficiency symptoms. Another one looks quite healthy, nice sized dark green leaves and roots reaching the bottom of the 3 liter bottle it is in, but the internode length is really short. 9 leaves along 1.75 inches of trunk. The other seedlings I have with 9 leaves have them spaced out over 5 inches, so this one looks like it might be a dwarf. Have you seen vein chlorosis in any of yours? Alex

Sorry, I don't have Quaker Delight. We overlap quite a bit but I have 3 named cultivars you don't have if you're interested: Sunflower, Rebecca's Gold, and Nyomi's Delicious. I don't need any more pears but I have two dozen varieties (18 Asians and 6 Europeans) if you're looking for more. I'm in Smyth County, a rural area of Southwest Virginia north of Abingdon, VA. I am not sure how far you are from Ohio, but the PawPaw festival is September 19 & 20 in southern Ohio. I think they usually have some of his varieties there that you can taste and buy.

My peterson pawpaw plants have not thrown their grafts, they're growing fine. My problem is that the local tree-rats take out all the fruit and break branches trying to get to other goodies. Pawpaw branches are pretty brittle from my experience. I find myself trimming back broken branches on my pawpaws more than any other tree in my yard (in fact way more...the only damaged branches I have had to trim this year were all pawpaw branches, mostly from PP varieties).

I am going to Pollard my IE mulberry this coming winter to reduce its overall size and encourage new growth (from which I may get fruit that I can actually reach and maybe the squirrels and racoons will be less liable to damage my pawpaws then)

I'd like to go to the festival, but it's probably 9 hours each way, a bit far for a weekend trip. Maybe in a couple years when my kids are older.

Good to hear your grafts are fine, too bad about the squirrels though. I like the idea of a pollarded IE. There was a brief discussion about that on the NAFEX list, one of the more experienced guys there thought it was a great idea.

The festival is small time operation. I wouldn't waste your time for 9 hours each way. I am 2 hours each way and with dragging a 1 & 3 yr old along it makes for a long trip.

I am going there this year, maybe I could pick some fruit up and send the seeds to you for trade.

Not Petersons, but...
The Sibleys (daughter & SIL of Corwin Davis, one of the pioneers in pawpaw culture) offer seed from pawpaws in their orchard/nursery - named-variety - and pollenized, I presume, by other superior selections grown there.
Last time I bought some, they were separated by fruiting-variety name, but I don't know if that became too much trouble, but you could ask.

Thanks for the link. They even sell seed by the pound, that's a lot of seeds! Makes me think of guerilla gardening :)
