how to cut through your lawn to repair

a sprinkler?

My current sprkinler heads are sitting too high (1/4") so I want to re-seat them (4) lower. They have been like this for about 1 yr now. How do I cut the lawn around the sprinkler and lower it some?

I may also need to install a few sprinklers. How do I cut through my lawn to do work and then put the pieces back w/out making a mess or leaving huge gaps etc?...

If I understand your question, you want to dig into the yard to lower the one sprinkler head and install new one.

Cut the sod using a shovel, a straight hoe, or lawn edger. (Mine is about 12" long with a serrated edge Quite a lawn weapon) Carefully remove the sod and stack it aside. Do the repairs or construction necessary refill the hole and carefully lay the sod back in place.

For new construction there are machines that carefully lift the sod and plow in the pipe.

You cannot blame your neighbor for your crabgrass. Crabgrass seed is everywhere, but it only germinates when the environment is right. It was your management that allowed the crabgrass to get started. Every now and then we will get a note here thanking us for the watering and mowing advice which put a dead stop to the neighbor's encroaching crabgrass. If you are doing it right, crabgrass will grow right up to the edge of your lawn and stop. It will stop because your soil is too dry for seed to germinate and because your grass is too dense for the crabgrass to get any light. First of all you need a dense canopy of grass. If you have fescue turf, you should overseed every fall until it is as dense as necessary to keep the crabgrass out. If the Pennington bag has Kentucky bluegrass in it, then the turf can become dense without annual overseeding. Secondly, only seed northern grasses in the fall. Why? Because crabgrass seed only germinates in the spring. If you seed grass in the spring, you will germinate all the crabgrass seed in the process. Also if you seed grass in the spring the summer heat will kill it. Third, do not mow at your mower's lowest setting. If your grass is dense you can mow at the 3-inch level. If it is less dense, then you might raise it up to the mower's highest setting until the grass becomes more dense. That might take years of overseeding if you have only fescue and no Kentucky bluegrass. Fourth, don't fertilize in the early spring. Wait until after the fast flush of spring growth is over. Memorial Day is a good day to shoot for. Once your lawn is established, the watering mantra is deep and infrequent. Deep means one inch all at one time. Infrequent means monthly watering in the cool months and gradually increasing the frequency to weekly in the hottest heat of summer. By allowing the soil surface to dry out completely between watering, the weed seeds cannot germinate. They need to have continual watering to do that. You might have neighbors who water daily for a few minutes. That is exactly wrong for too many reasons to go in to. After you have a few months of deep and infrequent going on, then you can adjust the amount you put down for your situation. Variables include shade, sun, clouds, wind, humidity, soil type and condition, grass type, mowing height, and probably some that don't come to mind right now. You need to measure the output of your sprinklers using a cat food or tuna can. Time how long it takes to fill a few of those cans placed around the yard. My system takes 8 full hour to fill a can but my neighbor's takes only 20 minutes. Every system is different. Another example of different is my house in San Antonio is under a dense canopy of oak trees. With my grass, mowing height, and soil, I can normally water for 3 hours per week in the summer (3/8 inch) but sometimes I have to go to 5 hours. During our driest years I will have to water for 7 hours per week to keep the grass from wilting before the week is up.

The JB Weld "might work". The problem with JB Weld in this case is that it is a "plastic" product. Because the "cut" in the head was created by combustion tracking, the JB Weld will be exposed to the same combustion temperatures at the end of the cut nearest to the combustion chamber. I believe the JB Weld would simply "bake & flake" out of the groove or cut after being subjected to the pressures and temperatures of operation and in the end, you would be right back where you were (with a combustion leak into the crankcase). Years ago (40 or more) there was a technique used to repair "cracks" that was called "stitching". In this "operation", a crack would be "filled" by drilling and tapping a hole at the beginning of the crack. A bolt or screw would be coated with "Permatex" and threaded into the hole. Then the bolt would be ground flush with the surface. A second hole was then drilled and tapped that centered on the crack, but overlapped into the first bolt a bit. A second bolt was "permatexed" and threaded into that hole. The drilling, tapping, and permatexing was repeated until the entire crack had been "filled in" with "stitches". I think this was mostly done where cast iron was the base structure. The thing about stitching was that it did nothing to restore "structural integrity" to the component. All that was really being done was "filling the crack" with permatex. If the crack was caused by water freezing in the block, an effective repair could be realized (effective means "NO LEAK"). If the crack also ran into, or through. part of the block that was subject to dynamic loads or stresses......it became a "boat anchor" or "foundry fodder". I don't believe you need to be overly concerned about "warpage" from a TIG weld in this case. The heat will dissipate throughout the casting pretty radidly and because this casting is very compact, there is not going to be a large area remaining "cool" for the stresses that result in warpage to develop. If the head is welded, you will need to have the deck (head gasket sealing surface of the head) "planed" or milled. After installing the repaired head (if you do have it welded) you should run (but not under a load, idling is OK)the engine long enough to heat up the head, then allow it to cool til it is just about "coffee cup hot". When the head has cooled to this temp, retorque the head. This will further "relax" and seat the head squarely on the cylinder. You might think that the "aluminum solder" would result in less heat! I doubt that because of how fast aluminum transfers heat. Using a small propane torch as a heat source for aluminum soldering, you would practically heat the entire head up to solder ready temperature before you could deposit any solder into the "cut".

Will try again with pictures. I dug down so that a brick could be put under the pipe and the pipe would be below the level of the sod. Outward to that I lay two bricks side by side against the fist brick to expand the floor. At the end of those two bricks I laid a couple of more bricks so the floor is about 3 bricks long. Starting at the pipe I laid a brick on each side of the pipe, creating a walls around the first brick, I laid two more bricks to create walls for the two floor bricks, so that the spill way expands as it gets further from the pipe. I just left the last bricks to lengthen the floor without walls. This is a work in progress and it has been so hot I have not mowed the yard in a week, but I think you can see what the intent is. As you can see in the second picture it is nearly invisible. and completely disappears from the house. (No comments on the quality of the grass. It is green and I have worked hard to get this to grow in the Carolina clay. ;-)

And a shovel.

You can cut a little ring of sod up around the sprinkler and set it to the side to be put back once finished. I don't know what kind of grass you have, so it may or may not repair itself.

Put all the dirt you remove on something so you won't lose any and can put it all back in the hole. You still may have settling. Don't worry. Fix it later.

Heres a question or 2 or 3, though.

1/4" isn't a lot. Did you install the system yourself? Was a hard, threaded sprinkler riser used to connect the heads to the lines? Or was a flexible riser used? (swing pipe, funny hose, etc.)

If the flexible risers were used, you may be able to push them deeper with no digging.

Thanks for all the replies. I did mean to dig around the sprinklers. I have 3 sprinklers that I want to lower (maybe more than 1/4")...my lawn is dwarf fescue in San Jose, CA 95118.

I just don't like the sprinklers heads being so visible.

I did install this myself and it's all hard threaded sprinklers risers.

My second dilema is to dig through the lawn so I can put sprinklers accross from one another (should have done this before) to get even coverage. It's a rectangluar design about 20' x 8'. Can I do this myself or have a lawn service perform this?
It sounds like I can just use a shovel and cut through the lawn so I can perform all this work. Is it this simple?

I don't see why you couldn't do it yourself. Especially since you installed the system yourself in the first place.

You want to make sure the lines are deep enough to be protected from any surprise freezing or other damage.

Not sure how far you are trenching. If you only have a short way to go, a shovel and mattock will do the job. Just takes more time and sweat than a trencher or pipe puller.

Be absolutely sure that all the soil coming out of the hole goes back into the hole even if it mounds up a little. It will settle back in as time goes on.

There is an installation method where you bring the 'riser' up at a shallow angle using flexible pipe. Then you can adjust the level very easily as grasshole mentioned. The reason for that method is to keep from breaking the hard pipe by hitting it with the mower or kicking it.

To install the new line, look into renting a Ditch Witch motorized trenching tool.

OK sorry I misunderstood you.

OK here is a pro's advice. You a sharp shooter shovel and excavate the soil about a 6 inch radius, and deep enough to fully expose the horizontal feed pipe, riser, and sprinkler.

Discard the soil, unscrew the head from the riser, and use a shorter length rise so that the top of the sprinkler head is flush to slightly above grade.

Back fill hole with 1/8 inch pea or crushed granite road gravel. It will make repairs real easy down the road, and does not settle much and will take a lot of weight.
