Weeds, trees and St. Augustine

My basic question is whether I can use a broadleaf weed killer under my shade trees?

My grass is St. Augustine (kind of thin in shady areas). My weeds include, but are not limited to henbit, white clover, oxalis and wild violets. My main shade tree in this area is a pecan tree. We generally don't eat the pecans, but the squirrels and the birds do.

I missed my application of pre-emergent in the fall, but I always still have weeds, so some must be perennial.

Thanks,

Bkay
