Newbie-Teacup birdfeeder?

First, I've been lurking on the GJ forum for weeks and can't get enough! I usually am checking on the compost, veggie, fruit, and square foot gargening forums, but this place is THE best!

I haven't installed my digital camera on this computer since my last one crashed, but will do so soon now that the kids are out of school!

I have already completed my first tipsey pots thanks to you people.. on a piece of iron that has been beside our patio for years (dh was"going to just cut it", well, 4 years later it's still there and I made use of it! LOL!!)

I just wanted to add my 2 cents on the tea cup bird feeders. My mother gave us some for Christmas 2 years ago. They each had words on the cups (peace, love, hope, etc. I got Peace on my cup) and she mounted it on a copper tube so we could just stick it in the ground. The thing I wanted to share was the little poem she attached, which read:

Your feathered friends could use a rest

A dainty teacup would be the best

A cup of water; a plate of seed

A tiny perch is all they need.

A pretty spot with lots of flowers

You'll be entertained for hours!

I'm not sure if she found the poem somewhere, or wrote it herself, but my guess is she wrote it! She's good like that :)

And now to my question...I have a chandelier sitting in the cellar (dh "is going to hang it in the dining room"....3 years later, "I'M" going to make a bird feeder out of it! I have my teacups ready to go, I was just wondering if there was any special trick to taking the wiring out? Just go for it? LOL!! I don't want to break it, but can't wait to do this project!

Also, I have planted in shoes before (long time ago!) and am planning on doing that again. Just wanted to say thanks to the poster who shared the pic with the garden sign saying "welcome to the garden of lost soles" or something similar! I'm taking that idea for mine :)

I have read and seen so much and am SO inspired! Thanks to all! And, I hope to share pics soon!

Welcome to GJ! Yes please post pictures as soon as you can. What a great poem your DM made, know that tea cup will be a good memory for a long time.

Welcome to the Junk Pile DJ, you already know it's a great time in here. No more lurking now, I, and I'm sure the others, are anxious to see the pics of your teacup birdfeeder and other projects. You're right, "just go for it" on taking the wires out of the chandelier. Use a pair of wire cutters and you'll do just fine. That's a lovely poem your Mom (or someone else) wrote for the feeders, hope you won't mind if I use that.

Nonacook, Thank You for also sending prayers for my brother and prayers back to you as I remember you recently lost your DH. I Love your gardens and saw the bird feeder on the lamp base. What a cute idea and I just happen to have the ingredients for the recipe :-)Your cabin and garden looked like many good times were enjoyed there. Sorry it no longer exists :-( I looked at your Elephants. I collect'em too and have one like your gray one you have sitting by the amber pole arrangement. I got mine many years ago at a FM in Texas. He has moved with me everywhere and is looking old for sure, but he still sits in front of my house all weathered but still has that sweet look on his face.

While it's not exactly a teacup, I had this jumbo Cheerios cup and saucer from Christmas a couple of years ago and it was sitting in my cupboard taking up space. Never knew what to do with it. So I made a birdfeeder out of it. All I did was glue the cup to the saucer with that Gorilla Glue, that stuff really sticks and then I glued an old jar lid onto my cut off broom stick and then I glued this to the bottom of the saucer. Worked like a charm and the glue really holds it together. This is the second one I've made. They're really pretty easy. For the time being, I just filled it with water, we have so many gackles around, if I was to fill it with sunflower seed they would eat a bowl a day. Ha ha.

I own a custom embroidery & quilting shop and 2 weekends ago I had a small craft show where I do more advertiseing them making moola. Reguardless, I was thinking I would sell way more embroidery stuff then my 'on the side craft items' and oh boy was I shocked when my crafts out sold the embroidery the first day..... on the feeders I put a price of $14.00 on them.... SOLD EVERYONE I HAD!!! ... all 7 of them! Woo-Hoo! Just cheap enough I had to have the dear hubby stay up til dawn making more for the next day of the show. HOWEVER, I did mine a little diffrent (and to me easier). I DID NOT drill a hole, but insted I bought a dozen of those 'wire cup/can' holders at our discount store to a tune of $2.27 each. They came in pink, green, yellow, blue, orange.. i tried to match my dishes. (the holders.....you know those that you have to push into the ground to hold your pop and the wire comes up around your can/glass) Jimmy then cut off all but one 'loop' and kinda pushed it down so my saucer would sit as flat as possisable [sp]. Turn it upside down to dry for a few hours and then i glued the cup onto the saucer and let it also dry a few hours. I used epoxie [sp] glue that i bought for $1.89 at the same store! Cant get no cheaper, can we? I got 3 feeders out on 1 tube. I also tweeked the 'Feathered Friend' poem a little so I could add the name... Mother-In-Law, sister, Mother, G-Mother, Sister, Wife .... and so you get the idea. Hope I could be of some help.... Teresa in Oklahoma

I shared the poem so others WOULD use it :) I just wanted to say, I'm not sure WHO wrote it! I can ask if Mom found it somewhere, but I'm guessing she did the writing :)

djscrapbook - You asked if there was a trick to removing the wiring from a chandelier. I want to know too.. So I am BTT (bump to top) this post.. maybe someone can help us.

I just got a beautiful Crystal Chandelier from Craiglist for cheap - cheap - cheap ($25 plus shipping) I am in the process of taking it apart to use in other projects.

All I do is try to get to the center of it,which might involve unscrewing the top or bottom. Then I reach in and clip all the wires I see with my wire cutters. Then I take out the screws in each arm,and clip the wires there,and pull them out of each arm. Hope that helps! If it's not in my way( that is,in the way of glueing on a cup and saucer for the things I make) I leave it in there. Most of the ones I've used, I turned the arms upside down because the cup part faced down,and I needed it facing up. That just flips around with no tools needed. Good luck,ya'll :)
