Variegated monstera...not a problem exactly

I have this plant that I received early this summer. It's a nice plant. My question is how do I get it to put on leaves full of variegation? The leaves that it puts out are ALL white and tiny. I like it but I like good variegation more. Any green in the leaves is very faint almost white. It didn't do much all summer and it lost all the white leaves it had. It's difficult to keep that way I guess...no way to make food! I thought maybe I had it in too high of light so I moved it when it came in the house to a lower light situation. Not too much lower though. I know that variegated leaves need more light. It's now putting out a leaf and it looks to be all white. What can I do to make it have some good green in the leaves. Is it just the genetics. It has two lowest leaves still with exactly what I want in terms of looks.

Hi Kyle. Actually an all white Monstera sounds nice. lol.

How much sun is it getting? Which direction is it facing?

Philos, variegated or green, do well in bright indirect light.

Options are:

Hot temps
Lack of Nitrogen
Nutrient Definciency
pH

How hot does the room get?
Do you fertlize and if so, what are the numbers?
Does your fertilizer contain nutrients
Have you checked soil pH?

Toni- Don't get me wrong it is very attractive all white! I just like a more variegated look. When it's all white the slightest "wrong" to it and it starts to brown and then the leaf is a goner!

Hmmm....that's a lot to ponder, lol. Well it is currently by a south window, not directly in it. I didn't want it to burn on account of too much light. I think it's about two feet away. Our house is ruffly 68 to 70 degrees on a given day and night. I put it into some MG mix about two months ago. I also havnt really fertilized it beyond that. Should I give it some being fall/winter? pH..........no idea. I have a monsterous all green one by it that is flourishing. Its putting out new leaves and it's my favorite plant. The perforation on the leaves is extraordinary!!!!!!! The largest leaf is like 3feet by 3 feet......oh is it beautiful! Anyway.....lol. How would I check the pH? Kyle

Yeah, they are. I've been out to visit him at Country Garden Bromeliads a few times. They have a pretty large operation. He showed me some of the hybrids hes working on. The last plant pictured was in a large group of Luna x RL Frasier hybrid. This particular one has lost most of its wide variegation. And is almost completely solid , except for a few fine variegation lines. Im not sure if it will make a good T, but ill try it anyways. Thanks for the link Sander. Very interesting info.

I would guess it's a combination of too much water and not enough sun - aren't most Pachypodium full-sun plants in their growth time? And Terri, if you have a separate question, it's best to post it as a separate thread - it's seen by more members and can be answered more quickly, usually. I see why you asked here, though. Anyway, back to your Pachys, unless they're severely underpotted, too, and are trying to grow with little/no success (and they should be in full growth mode now - warm and sometimes wet is how these tropical plants want it), I don't think you should have dying leaves. Give them a full inspection for critters, too, but it sounds to me like it's not enough sun.

Of those cultivars I love the Oridono nishiki ...even though it has variable variegation.from branch to branch.leaf to leaf.It is super hardy "somewhat" heat and sun resistant ( for a variegate) and had nice winter branch coloring and grows FAST...The Ukigumo is a really cool hardy tree but I personally have at times thought the photos I see of the variegation on line are from another planet ... Mine hasn't come close (yet)and has tended to be more sand dusted ... and others have said the same. Again the Peaches & Cream is a nice plant but the Aka shigitasu sawa is super hardy beautiful even when not showing variegation ( mine in mid summer) and takes heat well an all around winner that leafs out late great for northern realms...again alot of this is persoanl and area preference ....But those are my thoughts .. .All variegates are site picky ...you really need alot of afternoon shade for them so if you are in a new suberb or have limited space you may have a hard time siting too many of these .. .Jm's in general ,as most know, benifit from afternoon shade so if you have a large collection this is a "fight of cultivars" and if your variegates take up all yor primo space you may not have room for all those other wonderful non vaiegated trees...It's a real problem for all of us and I would guess be a monsterous problem down south if it is a somewhat bad problem for us northeners!! And as we all know we all plant to close even though as we dig the hole we know we shouldn't ...we do anyway ;>) I guess that gives us something to do down the road with that spare shovel ;>00000 David

Antigua!! Small world. We have a house in Antigua with a couple of Meyers; but no variegated anything. Invariably variegated citrus are weaker and more prone to diseases than the traditional citrus. Having said that, the distorted leaves looks to be leaf miner. The sticky stuff at the axils could be eggs; have you tried wiping it off with a Q-tip and alcohol? Could also be citrus twig borer; coffee is a host for that; and there is a mountain of coffee in Antigua. If you wash off the sticky stuff and find a hole in the stem, it is twig borer; all you can do is prune below it and burn the part with the borer in it. I treat my Meyers with ISD (Imidicloprid Soil Drench) twice per year; it is a systemic that kills anything that eats, chews, or bores into leaves or stems.

The variegation is unstable and some times branches revert to all green or all white. Does the base of the plant have more green in the leaves? If so, I would cut it back to that point. Your plant can not make any "food" without green, chlorophyll producing cells in it and will eventually die off.

Most people want their plants to have more variegation..lol

Your question is difficult to answer. Variegated plants need brighter light so leaves don't revert to green.

Monsteras are hardy. You can always experiment with light.
I don't ferilize this time of year, but if you decide to, add 1/4 dossage, higher in Nitrogen. Ex. 4-1-1

1 Tbsb to a gallon of Epsom Salts might help green it up.

What's the weather like your way?? Warm, cold, sunny cloudy?

It's said variegated plants are difficult.
My dh once bought an African Violet with pure-white leaves. He took it to work and placed in an unobstructed east window.
That plant lived 2-3 years, even flowered.
It was doing great until his work-placed moved. Lower light conditions, warmer temps. Bang, it died.
