Timing of next pre-emergent application.

I live in Atlanta, GA and have a Bermuda Tifway419 lawn. I last treated the lawn on November 15, 2008 using Lesco 0-0-7 Dimension pre-emergent. I havenÂt done anything since then.

My question is:

I want to hit the timing right on the next pre-emergent application and was wondering when I should apply the next treatment and will Lesco 0-0-7 Dimension pre-emergent be a good enough product to use?

I was debating splitting the next treatment into two sessions and laying one down in mid Feb and the next down in the middle of March .... or if that was too soon then I could lay the 1st session down in mid March and the 2nd down in mid April. Which is the best? Or should I do something different altogether.

The generally accepted timing for preemergents is when the forsythia bloom. Personally I've never had good luck with any preemergent materials so you do what you want to do.

My LESCO dealer advised NOT to use Dimension for my first Pre-M application as it only controls crab grass. I used a standard Pre-M (can't remember which) to control the winter weeds. Then I followed it with AMAZE, which has 2-or 3 ingredients that last upto 6 months.

Terps: I think that you may be crediting crabgrass with being a thinking creature, which it is not. Or you may be thinking that Pre-M "prevents" germination, which it does not - even though the name is "pre-emergent". Crabgrass seeds germinate when there is adequate moisture (think April showers) and proper soil temperatures. The Pre-M does not "delay" the germination, and the crabgrass seeds can't really "outlast" the Pre-M's effectiveness. The Pre-M works by preventing root formation after the grass has actually germinated. With no root system, it wilts and dies before you even see it. No second chances, no waiting for the Pre-M to lose it's effectiveness. It's germinated and dead. The only crabgrass that makes it is if the conditions for germination don't happen before the Pre-M barrier breaks down. If you want to bet that we might not get 60 degrees and wet weather before 90 days from now, than put down more at the beginning of Summer. I'm saving my money to use the additional Pre-M in very late Summer to prevent the Poa Annua germination period (which will overwinter and be NEXT Spring's headache).

Yeah I knew Scott's HALT was bad once I started reading the forum. I was just going by the Bible you wrote and it said 8 weeks after first application is a good time to apply another pre-emergent for the summer months. Is there much of a difference in the pre emergents or am I fine with any of the AMAZE, Dimension, or Barricade is avail at my local HD or Lowes?

I do not know about your area but thought i'd give you my opinion anyway! Your local extension office should be able to tell you the usual timing for applying crabgrass control. Then if you consider using the chemical Dithiopyr (one brand name is Dimension) timing is not as important. This product works over a longer time and will also kill small seedlings.

Solve the equation by selecting your "m" and it will result in the dosage amount per gallon which would cover 1000sqft. This is a common misconception. The amount of carrier (water) per ksf is a function of the sprayer volume, not a pre-determined thing, which is why spraying requires calibration. What you do is you mark a 10x10 section of driveway , take your sprayer and a timer, and see how long it takes you to spray that 100 sq ft section. You then take a large measuring cup and spray into it for the same amount of time to see how much water it used for 100 sq ft. Multiply that by ten and now you know how much water to use per thousand sq feet. My backpack sprayer with the fan nozzle puts out 1.3 gallons per ksf. The round spray nozzle puts out 0.7 gallons per ksf, but can be adjusted. If I'm trying to apply prodiamine to 3000 sq ft with the fan spray at a rate of 0.5oz per ksf, I would add 3.9 gallons of water to the sprayer and 1.5oz of prodiamine. If I'm going to do it with the round spray nozzle I would add 2.1 gallons of water and 1.5 oz of prodiamine. The amount of water will vary based on nozzle output and calibration. Calibration has to be done every time to ensure correct application.

Well I don't know that is quite true or not, he might of been trying to sell you something else. Dimension controls:

Crabgrass (preemergence and early postemergence)
Goosegrass
Annual bluegrass (Poa annua)
Barnyardgrass
Ryegrass (annual and perennial)
Kikuyugrass
Chickweed
Henbit
Oxalis
Spurge

Now with that said he didn't outright lie to you either as AMAZE controls more, last longer, but more expensive, but Lesco does not carry AMAZE, they carry a similar product in a liquid form for commercial application. AMAZE contains Balan and Surflan.

Good to know TW. You're right, LESCO doesn't carry AMAZE. I use it now because of your advice previously.

I used whatever their standard pre-M is. Maybe it was "Halts" based. They said wait for late winter to use Dimension.

I went to a class held by LESCO and their plan was to put down the first application of Dimension around April 1. They said some other weed seeds don't germinate until the ground gets much warmer. That is the reason for the second application of Dimension around June 1 but no later than June 20. It worked very well for me.
