Bacterial canker on prunus (cherr y, plum, etc)

I have found, on an ongoing basis, that my cherry and plum trees tend to be short-lived. A period of decline starts with overbearing, mechanical damage, winter dieback, or stress from heavy pruning and then after a year or two of limping along the tree dies. I am increasingly of the opinion that bacterial canker is at least partially to blame in most of these cases.

In general, I have found this disease to be a problem on trees 2-5 years old, although in some cases I have suspected that it has affected older plums after a year of overbearing.

Wondering how this compares to others' experiences with prunus.
