Decided to try my hand at the totem thing :)

omg!...what a perfect way to carry the lines of delicate glass, straight down to the firm, cast lines of that cement..
way to go!

now do tell, is that one of the things you cast?
and the stem pf that is really interesting..gotta see more of a close up and details of all about it..

don't ask for much, do I???

Actually, the birdbath was here when I bought the house. Pretty neat, huh? I love it but thought I'd add something for the butterflies, too!! :)

I made all nine in two days. Maybe I do something different. I stack and glue the pieces all at once. I don't have the patience to wait for each piece to set...the tall thin one is my favorite. I found Candle sticks and the mini vases on top at one yard sale Saturday Morning and had it put together as soon as I got home. If you want to see them close up click on the picture and I have singles of each close up in the album on Picasa. I must confess the red birdbath is simple clear glass that I have painted with glass paint. I wanted to try my hand at revers painting on glass. I am please with the results. I may have to make another painted one I have lots of clear glass but color sure makes a statement. When I started I was only gonna make one or two, Because I had no interuptions I just kept going! I wanted One of each color of the rainbow! LOL They will all be displayed in one Bed, held in with sand then Mulch. I also found Brand New White vinyl edgeing to use but I want to paint it first or at least wash it with some color. I am worried about Hurricane season. LOL Here are some pics of the bird bath. The birds won't bother the Monarch butterflies. Monarchs are poisonious to birds and other natural predators. The monarch caterpillar eats the toxic milky sap from the milkweed plant, and this toxin carries over to the adult butterfly. Normally with mother nature, the poisonious creatures exibit themselves with bright colors so other non-poisonious creatures know to stay away from them. As for nectar, I wouldn't worry about it. The milkweed is mostly a host plant for laying eggs. The adult monarchs have many many sources for nectar, not just milkweed. And regarding your mexican milkweed plant, I would check the underside of the leaves for monarch eggs. =)

Laurel, they are put together with GE Silicone II, you can go to the Garden Junk forum to view many more and get detailed instructions. They are really fun to make and are as unique and individual as the person who makes them. It is better to put them together in sections, and then put the sections together. And make sure you position all of the pieces where no water will collect, unless you will be using it as a bird bath or feeder. Sharon

Gatormom, I have container water gardens all over the place. They never turn into stagnant, mosquito infested messes. Once you have the plants balanced (not hard to do) and a couple of guppies in them, they are good to go. The guppies eat the mosquito larva, and the oxygenating plants keep the water relatively clear. You can top it off every other day or so, or even run it over a bit, if you want to change out some of it. I never use pumps or filters on my urns and tubs that I raise pond plants in. Here are a few pictures for you to see what I mean: This is a large, galvanized tub that I keep taro, rush, papyrus and dwarf water lilies in. I add black food coloring to make the water look deeper and more reflective. It also keeps algae growth down. This is an urn I had a potted canna in last year. You can see that I had hornwort floating in the water. (You can buy it at any aquarium place, including PetSmart.) It is a good oxygenator, and it gives the baby guppies (and there are always baby guppies) somewhere to hide. Here is the canna I'm growing in the urn this year. It really is not as hard as you might think, and during the summer, it is especially nice, because the plants never wilt or dry up. I plan to add several more container water gardens around the yard this year. I'm going to sink a big black tub in the ground and grow a lotus in it. Marcia

My you are a busy, busy girl. The totem/birdbath turned out great. The colors in that flower bed are really pretty and well thought out.

Very nice! Yes I love that big heavy glass paned bottom pc actually in the water and then the lighter daintier ones above, with the little moat for the butterflies. Have you seen any of them used it yet? That would be a treat. Always keep your camera with you, you never know. It looks great there.

VERY pretty! Love the lines of the totem and the idea of putting it in the birdbath is great....I may have to try that too! Your garden looks lovely too!

Thanks everyone! Yes, that is a GREAT birdbath!! I wish I had another one in the back yard. I bought one at the swap meet for $5 for a mosaic project which I like but it's not near as pretty as this one! Good enough for mosaic though!!

Becky - That is my house. The WHOLE thing is done in that stone. Apparently, the guy who built it in the 30's was pretty scared of tornados because even the INTERIOR walls are all made of stone & concrete and are about 10" thick! It's like a dungeon!! lol :) Cell phone reception stinks!!

I wonder why you put a butterfly bath in the same area you want to attract birds. I would expect the birds are probably going to think of the Butterfly Bath more along the lines of a snack tray.

Lol @ Lil! You could be right. Let's hope not. Maybe the birds will think of the birdbath as the bathtub and the glass dish as a drinking dish.

Sooner, it is very pretty but then so is your entire garden! And I love the stone of your house. Not so sure I'd like it on the inside walls but it is beautiful stone. Keep those beautiful pictures coming!

The way you're creating things, I think I need you to bottle up and send me a bit of your energy. Tho I have a good excuse right now...June in Phoenix. sigh. 113.

LOL!! Honestly, I hadn't thought of attracting butterflies to where the birds are! Oh well, it's really more for looks than anything and they seem to coexist in the garden as it is now.

The walls INSIDE the house are stone & concrete but are all covered with plaster. Yeah, I love stone but think that would be a little much for me, too!! :) They are just super thick and it takes a hammer drill to hang even the smallest picture!! But since I live in tornado alley it's worth the trouble!

Karen - I do understand the heat!! We aren't as hot as you by any means though. We had a cold front and now we are in the low 90's - very nice!! I am one of those obsessive people who looses focus real fast but whatever I'm doing at the time, I do it at 100 mph. Last month it was my yard, this month it's "junk", next month we could be back to cake decorating, who knows??? My friends and family know EXACTLY how I am and get a kick out of it. They ask, "So what's the obsession of the month?" lol
