How to pump water uphill from the creek to the garden?

I'd like to be able to irrigate my garden with water from the creek on my property.

Trouble is, the creek's about fifty feet in elevation below the garden (across a distance of about a hundred yards.) I saw a 2-inch, 4 HP pump at Tractor Supply Company that's supposed to lift water 26 feet at the suction head, and that would handle a total head of 98 feet.

So what do these numbers mean? Should I be able to put the pump in a flat spot beside the creek, suck water six or eight feet into the pump, and then push it through three hundred feet of hose up a fifty-foot elevation change and into the garden?

Thanks...this is one of those maddening questions that none of the pump retailers seem to be able to answer.
