Hum, now is the clothesline in dirt or is there concrete all around the bottom of the posts? It would definitely be great support. I'm thinking those clotheslines look more like the supports they use for grapes. My only other thought is that with a clematis or honeysuckle you'd have to make sure it was one that is the smaller height version unless you somehow want to put extensions on top to give support to taller growing vines. This is what I did with an old patio umbrella. It's achcored in a PVC pipe bracketed to the wood raised flowed bed. Last year I had this morning glory. It didn't come back this year so I planted a passion flower vine. It's almost to the top now..

If it is a Tpole, then drill and put in eye hooks along top and matching # along the side, run wire back and forth and instant trellis.

I took some plastic coated wire and cut it the same width as the "T" part and put it from one pole to the other. I took wire and attached it to the "T" part and the existing eyelets in the "T" part to secure. Then I decreased its size from the top of the "T" to the bottom of the pole. I used re-bar to secure it to the ground. I planted lace vine on the outsides of the poles (both poles) and trained it across to meet in the middle. I had to have something that grew substantially since my poles were 25 feet apart. I didn't want to use trumpet vine because it is too invasive. I may mix clemetis in with the lace vine next year.

I agree with twomonths, that is what I was thinking too. I also have one that is a T type pole that we drilled holes along the top of the T and secured a length of hog wire to and then we attached into the dirt at the bottom of the pole - looks like a screen? I hope I explained that right lolol.

Oh, I should have mentioned that the clothesline is the "T" type metal poles with clothesline running between. The poles are set in concrete and are about 25 feet apart.

kaysbelle- I would love to see pictures of the lace vine on the clothesline trellis. Sounds pretty.

I have the t-poles and long 2x4s added between each pole--and lattice sheets over boards--have silver lace vine and climbing roses growing over top, concrete patio poured underneath. After several years it is starting to deteriorate so planning on revamping into a screened-in porch.

I have one T-pole that has a white wisteria on it--and it has gone crazy with growth the last year when I couldn't work in the garden. It had been trimmed to resemble a tree, and was doing just great. It was beautiful this spring, but it certainly needs to be cut back now.

I still use my clothesline :) I have wooden T's for my posts but I planted clematis beside both of mine and then rested something against them for the clematis to grow up. On one end I have the old iron porch piece and for the other I have an old ladder that I have to finish fixing so it will last out there!

I still use my clothesline, too. But I thought this idea might be used to make a strong trellis out of the clothesline post. Ours is made from the guide wire on the electric pole in the middle of our backyard. We stretched a length of wire fencing from it to the ground. The end piece away from the ground wire is supported by a stake driven into the ground then attached to the end of the fencing. I hope you understand my meaning. Jlily
