Anyone know their pear trees?

Good morning!

We inherited an old, overgrown orchard when we purchased our home a few years ago. I've been trying to make improvements this year, but as you can see from some photos I've uploaded... I still have a long way to go. We have a mixture of apple and pear trees. I did some heavy pruning on the apple trees last winter, but was not able to prune the pear trees. I'll tackle those this winter. Even with being overgrown, they seem to have produced a decent amount

of fruit. I know the trees still have some disease - I've been trying to overcome things organically... but it's not as simple as I hoped it would be.

Anyway, I uploaded some pictures of some pears off of different trees to a flickr album (http://www.flickr.com/photos/40714254@N00/). I'm hoping some folks here know their pears and can help me identify

what varieties we might have growing. I've numbered the pictures. If pictures start with the same number, they are the same tree, just a different view and a slightly different explanation after the number.

Any help you can offer is much appreciated! I'm hoping to harvest some of the pears this year. I just don't know when to expect them to ripen... hence trying to figure out the varieties.

Sara, if you might be able to post your photos right here on the forum in your message, you might get some quicker responses. Just copy and paste each photo's .html code string right into the body of your message and voila! You have a photo that will appear right in your message. A very cool and helpful feature on this forum. You'll know if you did it correctly as your photos will show up when you preview your message before you submit it. We do have some extremely knowledgeable pom folks on this list (look at all my recent pear posts for example), so I be they would love a good mystery. Alan (harvestman) is especially good at this, as this is part of what he does for a living.

If it were mine I wouldn't use anything other than a thorough leaf clean up after leaf drop since remaining leaves help to infect the tree the next season. Leaf spots are seldom detrimental other than from an aesthetic viewpoint. Bacterial blights can be ruinous (like fireblight on pear) but that isn't what your tree has. hortster

I have a peach, nectarine, plums, blueberries, apple and a Hood Pear plant. I reported here a few years ago, since then there has been nothing much to report. Only the Florida Prince peaches continue to fruit every year, and also the hood pear, my latest addition to my collection. The hood pear is really good, crisp and sweet, and the size is about what you will find in the markets. I am disappointed in the nectarine and my plums. They flower but do not necessarily fruit. I've gotten some very small fruits that taste good, but very very small and very few. Most of my blue berries died, I think they are getting too much water. I live in Palolo Valley on Oahu and it gets pretty wet for long periods of time here. However, my local fruits are doing well; bananas, mountain apples, papaya, oranges, lemons/limes, and avocados all do very well.

I agree with Embo, mostly what I see looks like clerodendrum, the big fuzzy looking ones, and loquat, the dark green serrated ones. Loquat has serrated leaves as a seedling. I don't see anything that looks like pear seedlings, but I've been wrong before LOL.

Jack ('Jaczam') is semi-dwarf - that is the main point of it. Speaking of points, most of the tips of example shown look pointed to me. Rather than snipped off and flat, the lack of foliage on the extreme terminals being due to some other occurrence than somebody heading the tree back. Basically, they all look basically Bartlett or possibly Anjou to me. There is one photo that could be a Bosc, but it also could just be a Bartlett type heavily russeted.

photo 2 sort of resembles what Clapp's Favorite looked like here before fireblight devoured it. Seems like 5/6 were kinda Bosc-like in appearance. Others...who knows.
They all look good - just enjoy them, regardless of what the variety names are.
