My Latest Garden Treasures: A Wood Squirrel & A Second Eagle

Hi Everyone! Just had to share my latest Goodwill findÂ a wooden squirrel! He is about 10 inches tall and is holding a brass nut. We have lots of squirrels around so he fits perfectly into our country setting. DoesnÂt he look neat?!

I already posted an eagle I bought from Goodwill. I found a second one on Ebay, mounting him on the same trellis. (The trellis is made from an old piece of rustic scaffolding I found.) ENJOY! Bear Hugs! Kirk

So happy for your latest find. You have a nice way of displaying your treasures. Will they hold up in the weather or will you have to stain them?

Oh, I'll stain them like I do my other wood items like my many bears. The squirrel won't need as much care as I'll keep him under our covered porch. That squirrel has such character! Kirk

Hello all, Last year I lost a HUGE percentage of my tomatoes and all of my corn to squirrels (yard rats). I resorted to rat poison. Sorry folks but I was desperate. I have a small container garden and there was NOT enough to live and let live. Problem is this winter hawks and eagles moved into the neighborhood and began eating the squirrels. I could not risk having a bird of prey die from eating a poison squirrel. I did serious indepth research and found a product which works. It is called Plantskydd Animal Repellent. It smells REALLY REALLY REALLY awful but it works. Problem is you have to start putting it around before the squirrels begin destroying your trees, fruit and gardens. It is NOT a bad taste repellant like hot pepper wax. It is blood meal and some other stuff. Do I still have squirrels around?? Yes! They have not taken one - NOT ONE - bite of my garden this year. I started putting Plantskydd Animal Repellent on the ground about 2 weeks before I set my plants in their containers (I have 25 EarthBoxes). I do not need to replace after a rain. Because I am wary I do put more Plantskydd around the garden every 3 weeks. I also have a small bottle of bobcat urine which I put on the wood fence ledge in our yard. Will it work for you?? I do not know. Hot pepper wax did not work for me. The squirrels just went to each and every tomato and took a bite. The corn never got to make ears because the squirrels ate the plants off at the knees!! I do have some help from the hawks and eagles but they don't eat all the squirrels. Good luck, DL

Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

well, the snack box is all packed up and will be out in tomorrow's mail. since i am not supposed to say who it is going to, those that are left - head's up. hope you and your squirrely friends enjoy the treats i chose for you. i received my second package yesterday, which i am just loving. thank you so much pal (jeanne/sandlapper), i just love it. i got a new book, in the cutest little heart canvas bag. an envelope stamper, a butterfly windsock, a set of bookplates (which are fantastic). a cute little heart body -(it's hands and legs and instead of a body, it's a heart...too cute for words) and a paint sponging kits, which i will try using on some clay flowerpots. there was also the sweets lattice type fabric heart bag filled with hershey kisses and this magnificent "tree free" journal, which is will treasure forever. jeanne, the box was full of great things, but this journal is just so unbelievable! i love the card too, which i thank you for and i laughed when you took the "short story" route LOLOL. thanks for everything jeanne, what a great box! be well everyone. earthly

Milton: My husband claimed that at uni, he reached a detente with a family of racoons by giving them part of his sandwich. The family (it's always three of them with the creepy grunting in the dark at night) we now have in the yard do not seem to bother anything, not even the vegetable garden. However, I did have to boot them out from under my wood shop using---sit down for this one---bars of Irish Spring soap shoved generously throughout. The odor is unbearable even to me; and they are more sensitive to it than I am. If that had not worked, I was prepared to drill holes into the floor boards and empty bottles of the same rancid cologne/fragrance oil thing that the vet recommended for my cat who is allergic to bug bites. The substance is so vile to my sinuses, I would have needed to put on my respirator mask just approaching the shop. Kev: Yikes. They like a lot of stuff. We have squirrels here, too, but the brown ones but they only topple pots and do not seem interested in anything I am growing. Also, the tree guy once counted 4 walnut trees and 6 oak trees growing around our property so they scoff at my plants. So caging is not an option? Or drones.

Ok, Kirk, just where do you live and how often do you and the family leave the house? he-he I am a sucker for carved wood items. Even if it looks like carved wood, I'm all over it. I just love that squirrel and the eagles look awesome together on the fence!
