First gazing ball

This is my first gazing made from a light globe. I poured 3 colors of acrylic paint into it (yellow, light yellow and metalic gold) and swirled them around inside. The detail doesn't show as well in the photo as I had hoped. The metal base is a candle holder that I got at a thrift store. I'm having SO much fun!

That turned out so lovely! And what a GREAT stand you found for it too. First your clock gazing ball and now this, I'm quite green with envy.

I haven't seen these but think you could easily find something to work if you know the diameter of your ball to use. I think they would be terrific in a metal hanging basket such as used for those with cocoa liners, or even an old kerosene lamp holder may work if you have the right size and use some form of fixative to hold it in place. My husband made a stand for mine with welding horse shoes together.

Hi Janice! Welcome.....I am lazy,so the way I do it is to "frost" my BB with silicone using a plastic disposable knife, then stick the half marbles on. I do it in sections, and it sets up really fast, so you get the ball finished quickly and I hardly ever get silicone on the marbles. Use a bowl or something similiar to hold the BB while you glue,or even a wadded up towel works great. I just passed up some bowling balls at a thrift store( kicking self) that were only a dollar each all because my DH had a fish-flopping seizure and said we didn't NEED any more gazing balls in the yard! Can you imagine???? One was a beautiful hot pink swirly color :) Usually he goes along with whatever I want.

I use GE Marine silicone...it's clear and it comes in a manageable tube and boy does it stick!(downside it costs almost $4.00/tube!) Well, it dries in 10 minutes! So I can get a good bit of work done on a bowling ball in a day...I'll glue about a 4"patch, wait 10 mins and do some more...DH says it reeks to high heaven but I don't notice it!lol! I have heard silicone fumes are very bad for you!!! I have switched to making round balls of concrete instead of bowling balls as they could crack when frozen in the winter weather, and concrete doesn't. I make them by mixing up quickcrete and pouring it into an old round glass light fixture, let it cure then smash the glass off it. I just bought some gorilla glue that I may experiment with....mortar is always good too. I seem to love doing glass on glass projects and so have a good supply handy of the marine silicone for that.

I thought of mosaicking one of those clear glass light shades with stained glass pieces but then noticed the ball shaped shades have all disappeared at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I'm wondering if people are buying them up or if they are throwing them out. I'll have to ask. I like the green on this one.

how pretty! love the colors and the stand is awesome!! i did the paint swirled in the clear christmas ball ornaments with my kids several years ago..they turned out great! we put them on the christmas tree every year..great memories!

Great job! The color combo turned out very pretty and looks wonderful with the stand. Did you paint the globe inside the rusty old clock stand too? If so, how did you do it?

No, I didn't paint that one. We have a HUGE art festival here each August. I bought it there. It was in our fish pond until we moved. Now we have no fish pond. It's just one more thing to clean. Also, the racoons kept eating the fish.
