garden 'snakes'

I'm new, & love all the great ideas everyone has! I took an old piece of copper gas line, curved it up & down, then painted it a green color, similar to a garden snake. I put it in a flower bed, where it scared my (adult) daughter! The intent was for it to look like a snake, so I did ok. I also take old pizza type sattelite dishes, put chain in the little holes, & hang for bird feeders. Usually add thin wire, multi-colored beads, paint, whatever I can find to decorate them. Have lots of bird houses, feeders, watering pans & little things everywhere. Good thing I don't have neighbors!

Dorothy, Your dog sounds very well-behaved. Mine would have barked their heads off at that snake. Any of them except Duke might have approached it. Duke was bitten by a timber rattler a few years ago and barely survived. He remembers it well. Even seeing a black water hose makes him freak out and run for the house, and he's a big 120-lb. dog. Bon, Copperheads already are up and out here and someone in the county west of us was bitten by a venomous snake two weekends ago although I don't know what kind of venomous snake got him. He was transported to the hospital Code Three, which is bad. We have had snakes out for at least 3 weeks, both venomous and non-venomous ones, and skinks, lizards, toads, frogs and turtles have been out longer than that. They've been loving this weather. The frogs croak all afternoon and evening when I'm working in the garden. They're probably croaking all night, but I am inside with the windows closed and cannot hear them. Our first year here we thought we'd sleep with the windows open in the spring, which was a huge mistake. The frogs would get so ridiculously loud that we couldn't sleep. Anyone who thinks that rural areas are nice and quiet at night must live in a rural area very different from the one I live in. There is a never-ending racket all night long. Dawn

I once was repotting some indoor plants and found a huge worm coiled in the bottom of one pot. I knew it wasn't a snake, but I was so grossed out I threw the entire pot outdoors. I found it again in the spring and the worm had disappeared. I hope a bird ate him. He certainly scared me!

Another tip is don't kill / drive off the non-rattlers. They're your friends. They'll help keep the food level down and compete for the territory. I was so disappointed when I'd hired some guys for yard work and they killed a LARGE garden snake (and were so proud of themselves). Rattlesnakes are supposedly deaf - it's the vibrations more than the noise that drive them off, don't rely only on noise (bang a shovel or rake on the ground as you walk if you have an area you're concerned about). And to add to Hoovb - most folks get bitten trying to kill the snake. Don't get overly brave with your shovel. Also, many folks don't know when they've been bitten by a young rattler as it may not swell (doesn't have both kinds of poison for that yet) and many report it felt like a bee sting so they didn't pay attention. Had a friend have one in her garage - I need to add new flashing to the bottom of my garage door and no longer get to walk out there in sandals / flip flops. I keep shoes by that door and close garage doors even if I'm going in and out with garden things. Make sure you carry your cell phone with you when working in the garden - there are different clip on holders you can find.

Yes, pictures please. I love the idea of using "dishes" for bird feeders. Your garden sounds fun! I seem to have an abundance of bowling balls and after covering a few with various things, am looking for idea's for 3 or more in a row.
